I will never blankety blame or demean first responders, whether law enforcement, fire department or medical/EMS for things that go wrong. We’re hearing all kinds of things about possible misjudgments and outright screwups taking place in Uvalde. They might be true and some likely are. But I would bet that the LE officials in charge were following protocol and adhering to training (consider the source of that training) they had been through.
My point … Sometimes it is better not to follow protocol or to act against one’s training. As a volunteer firefighter who has been putting out fires for 39 years after sitting through training and helping to establish protocol for members of our department, I will freely admit to going off the book from time to time and reacting to what the situation seemed to call for rather than relying on protocol and training.
But the problem nowadays is, especially with LE, everyone is looking for them to screw up so they can point the finger at them. The extreme left so they can accuse them of wrongdoing and the extreme, anti-government right because they act as agents of the government. So they are less likely to go rogue (which is exactly what the boarder patrol agent did who took this shooter out…and check out the guy’s hat…an inch or so and the story could have been quite different) and try to do what sometimes needs to be done to minimize casualties and/or end a situation.
I don’t know why anyone would want to be in LE nowadays. But I am thankful for those who do. And I can’t blankety condemn them for their efforts at any time of crisis such as this.

Diversity Makes Greatness

We need fundamental change.
We have a violence and guns problem in this country.
We need a national gun registry. We need automatic weapons out of the public. We need a clean psych test before anyone is allowed to have a gun. We need to spend a lot more on mental health.
Tax gun owners for the gun safety regulation, tax the super-rich to pay for mental health services.
If we don't come up with some kind of way for people to safely own guns, then one day the country is going to flip the other way and ban them outright.
The worst fears of the NRA might be realized one day. We don't hear much call to abolish the 2nd but if something isn't done that's coming.
