A North Texas GOP chairman with a history of firing off inflammatory, racially charged social media comments is in hot water again, this time for appearing to referring to people who receive federal food assistance as “chimps.”

Tarrant County GOP Chairman Bo French tweeted out the comment Tuesday, appearing to surmise what will happen when the White House cuts off funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the government shutdown.

“November 1, 2025, is National Chimp Out Day,” French tweeted. “It’s going to be lit.”

French’s comment is already drawing backlash from people who argue he used it to target Black Americans, whom right-wing media and social media influencers have long accused of misusing the welfare system — with little evidence.

Indeed, the majority of SNAP beneficiaries are white, Food Research & Action Center numbers show. Only slightly over a quarter of recipients are Black.

“This is flat out racist rhetoric, and the comments being posted are flat out inciting violence,” @AandATXCrimDef tweeted in response. “How is this man still leading the Republican party in Tarrant County?”

X user @cd_hooks agreed.

“Texas Republicans, what are you gonna do about this guy?”

Even so, French pleaded ignorance, claiming in a followup tweet, “It just means freaking out.”

However, on Monday, French, in another inflammatory X post, warned that the nation would face rioting. As purported evidence, he pointed to the 2020 nationwide protests over police brutality, which despite some disturbances were largely peaceful.

“40 million people will not get free food anymore,” French wrote. “Remember what happened when they rioted over a dishonest narrative following George Floyd? Imagine what 40 million will do. Plan accordingly.”

Divisive online comments have been part of French’s political brand.

In June, French caught flak for calling LGBTQ+ people “degenerates” and accusing Muslims of participating in bestiality.

That same month, he grabbed headlines for a tweeting out a poll that asked whether “Muslims or Jews” were a bigger threat to the nation. Despite calls from Republicans, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, to resign from his post, French remains in office.
