Lakessha LaShawn Johnson, 34, was shot in 1998 but California's King County Coroner's Office has ruled her death on November 4 this year was the direct result of her gunshot wound, KTLA reports.

Johnson was accidentally shot leaving a bowling alley when a backseat passenger in the car she was travelling in picked up a bag containing a firearm, causing it to go off.

The initial wound left Johnson, then 21 years old, paralysed after hitting her in the spine.

Complications have continued throughout her life and three years ago she had to have her legs amputated.

The gunman, Ronnie Brown, was found guilty of charges related to the 1998 shooting and served two years in prison.

Police are now treating the death as a homicide and the sheriff will meet with prosecutors this week to decide whether Brown will face new charges over the shooting.
