No ‘Oppenheimer’ fanfare for those caught in first atomic bomb’s fallout

Proving that radiation caused the cancers that have afflicted New Mexico’s downwinders is extremely difficult. A major study published in 2020 by the National Cancer Institute concluded that Trinity fallout may contribute to as many as 1,000 cancers by 2034, most in people who lived very near the test. There is “no evidence to suggest” cases among subsequent generations were related, the study noted.

"What happened here in the aftermath, surviving “downwinders” and their relatives say, is a legacy of serious health consequences that have gone unacknowledged for 78 years. Their struggles continue to be pushed aside; the new blockbuster film “Oppenheimer,” which spotlights the scientist most credited for the bomb, ignores completely the people who lived in the shadow of his test site.

It was a new weapon, we didn't know a safe way to test it, and we were in the midst of a gruesome war.

Those may not be excuses, but they're certainly explanations.

I don't think that anybody intended to radiate anyone,
but circumstances didn't make caution seem like a priority.
The world was at war.

who cares

The covid vax was a test!

Not buying it. The nearest town to the Trinity site is Carrizozo over 30 miles away (pop at the time ~2000). Hell, you can visit the Trinity site today.

https://www.nps.gov/whsa/learn/historyculture/trinity-site.htm

All the WaPo article does is, for the most part cite anecdote. The studies cited, like this one, https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/2307/2307.11040.pdf just show that the aftermath of that detonation are grossly exaggerated.

According to a new study, the fallout floated to 46 states, Mexico and Canada within 10 days. In 28 of 33 New Mexico counties, it estimates the accumulation of radioactive material was higher than required under the federal compensation program.
(from the article)

Yea, until you read the study. 10[sup]-5[/sup] becquerels is nothing in terms of radioactive count, and something like three quarters of the area supposedly irradiated got next to nothing in terms of fallout.

It's just some journalist fear mongering on things nuclear as usual in the WaPo...

You lie all the time.

New Mexico advocacy group speaks out about ‘Oppenheimer’ film

“When they came here to film this movie, they essentially did the same thing as the Manhattan Project itself. They’ve invaded our lands and our lives, they’ll make hundreds of millions of dollars off this, and it’s total exploitation,” Cordova said.

In addition to seeking recognition for affected New Mexicans, the downwinders are also seeking medical compensation from the government.

“[When the government] starts to pay out partial restitution and offers us health care coverage, that is when the people of New Mexico will start to find healing that they have been searching for 78 years,” said Cordova.

If they were adults 78 years ago when the tests occurred, they're likely long dead by now.

If they were newborns or near being born, they're in their late 70's and obviously weren't negatively affected.

At any rate, they're near death anyway.

yeah, people gonna die

We tried to warn them that we had a new super weapon and that they should lay down their arms and quit so we didnt have to use it. A damn sight more than they did when they attacked Pearl out of the blue BTW. They didnt listen. Instead they fucked around and found out. Dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ending up actually SAVING lives on BOTH sides. If we would have had to do an actual boots on the ground land invasion of Japan it would have cost them quadruple the lives AT LEAST then what the first A bombs cost them as they were very radicalized and surrender was not in their vocabulary. To say nothing of the massive loss of life on our side. A land invasion of Japan would have been a blood bath on a grand scale, not to mention the Island hopping involved fighting it out tooth and nail on the way there. Those who cry about the Atomic Bombing of Japan are ignorant of FACTS and history.

I am still considering seeing this movie, which would be rare for me, I generally avoid anything Hollywood post 2017...certainly 2020.

slavery ended 158 and all affected are dead long time ago...so STFU about it

There are many conflicts in history that could have ended earlier by targeting civilians.

It's a choice. It's not a moral choice, and it's not one I'll ever defend or support. A country like America should not be intentionally targeting civilians. Period.

A full on land invasion of Japan would have cost a tremendous amount of civilian casualties. Probably more than the deaths caused by the bombs. You have to understand the people of Japans mindset in those days......they would have fought to the death every inch of the way. CIVILIANS and military, not just the military. It would have been awful for all parties involved.
