This article is from 1998.
I'm aware. The point is Bill Clinton, like Obama, fought Republicans every step of the way toward balancing the Federal budget.
It is a good article. It shows why a good number of people are in favor of split government. Once W. took office the Republicans lost that will to fight for a balanced budget.
Lost the will, ahahahahaha, oh, dear, did they ever have it? I mean if they really wanted a balanced budget they wouldn't keep giving away their revenue!
Did they battle Bush the same way they battled Clinton?

Their mistake was cutting taxes without also cutting spending. They had a golden opportunity to trim the government and blew it.
If they didn't want to cut spending, they shouldn't have cut taxes.
Why would they? They were in fear of being painted un-patriotic. anit-American and a Nazi if they had.
???
They got comfortable in office. They were in power to long and Bush let them spend whatever they wanted.
Uh, that is not my recall. I saw a Congress terrified to do anything under Bush that wasn't sanctioned by Bush and Co.
The Republicans in Congress were forced to spend that much money against their will? So they really wanted to be fiscally conservative but Bush scared them so they spent instead?
Seriously, cawacko, were you "under a rock to quote another poster...don't you remember those times and Congress?
Oh, that's a lulzy statement if I ever saw one.the conservative think tank Cato Institute

And all their other Libertarian thoughts. Like less government.Yeah, Cato is a libertarian organization. Biggest difference from Republicans is their foreign policy beliefs.
And all their other Libertarian thoughts. Like less government.
A little balance to the conservative think tank Cato Institutes version:
