Vallejo police wrongfully killed two pet dogs when they fired tear gas into a home in search of robbery suspects, igniting and destroying the residence, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The incident happened Feb. 10, 2012, after police responded to reports of a robbery in which the victim was beaten by several men who fled in a car. Officers spotted the car and chased it to the 1000 block of Castlewood Drive, where the men got out and fled toward a home rented by 21-year-old Lindsey Pilotti.

Police surrounded the home and used a public-address system to order anyone inside to come out. Hearing no response, police called in the SWAT team. Several hours later, the SWAT officers fired "nonflammable, non-incendiary (tear) gas" into the home, police have said.[/QUOTE]

right, then explain the fire...
oh, they did LOL

But tear gas rounds accidentally started a fire, possibly after the canisters knocked over flammable household products, authorities said.

Pilotti's pit bull-terrier mix dogs, Alize, 3, and Kush, 1, were killed in the blaze. Her mother recovered their bodies the next morning in a city garbage dump

and the kicker that puts the government seal of approval on these new tactics is....

City Attorney Claudia Quintana called the dogs' deaths unfortunate, but said lobbing tear gas into a home where robbers were thought to be hiding "seems a reasonable and appropriate response."
