Netflix is in rough shape. This week will determine its future
Netflix, once a darling of Wall Street, is suddenly on the ropes.

The streaming giant will report its second-quarter earnings on Tuesday, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most consequential moments in the 25-year history of the company.

Netflix is having a terrible year. In April, the company reported that it had lost subscribers in the first quarter of 2022 – the first time that had happened in any quarter for more than a decade. Netflix’s stock subsequently burst into flames (it’s currently down about 70% so far this year), wiping out billions of dollars in market value, and the company laid off hundreds of employees....

...Netflix is pinning its hopes on potential savior: advertising.

The company announced Wednesday that it will partner with Microsoft on a new, cheaper ad-supported subscription plan. Despite Reed Hastings, Netflix’s CEO, being allergic to the idea for years, advertising is now a major part of Netflix’s plans to boost revenue going forward. The new tier will reportedly come before the end of 2022, but Netflix admits its nascent ad business is in its “very early days.”

The company is also focusing on clamping down on password sharing and focusing on creating compelling content to help turn the tide.

Changes are in the wind:

Netflix rises after choosing Microsoft as partner to roll out ad-supported tier
The streaming giant will partner with Microsoft (MSFT) to help roll out its new ad-supported offering later this year. The tech giant, which generated $10 billion in advertising sales last year, will serve as the streamer's technology and sales partner.

Netflix stock rose to a session high on the heels of the announcement, up more than 2% in midday trading.

Clamping down on password sharing will lose them more users.

It's a survival situation. They need to be able to compete. Even Amazon is having to look at it's model.

Still, the basics of supply and demand remain true; what's the difference between a pay service with commercials (Hulu) and a free service with commercials (Tubi, Roku, Pluto, etc)? Quality of shows. Netflix has some great ones like Ozark, Queen's Gambit. If they maintain the quality, people will still pay. Unfortunately, Ozark has ended the series (Sorry, Ruth!) and Gambit was a mini-series. I hope Network survives since they do carry shows and movies I like even in a crowded field of services.

Main thing I watch is Discovery Plus and Hulu. Hulu is my brother's though and I canceled Netflix and after several platforms, I landed on Discovery Plus.

Some of this is bullshit, Netflix, like others, bonused out beyond expectations during Covid, and now that people are venturing out, their numbers on down, which they declare then as massive losses. You see the same logic in many companies, if the profits don't match last quarter's they view it all as losing money

They should have anticipated such and prepared

Netflix should be fucked as people have figured out that they dont care about quality, and they dont care about us as they churn and burn cancelling early the few good shows that they luck into.

We will be cancelling Netflix soon I think, we continue to watch it less.

I think the streaming services gambled on the cinemas not recovering.

That seems to be the case, but cinemas were long into decline even before COVID. A big part of the problem is that Hollywood is ashes now, burned down by WOKE ideologues who have no interest in telling good stories.

Mostly watching Trump reruns on Youtube?

The movies not destroyed by WOKE ideology such as the new Top Gun and Minion movies are notable by their rarity.

I have no idea what that means nor have I seen the new movies yet but when Netflix plays them I'll watch. :)

About time. I should have cancelled years ago.

The last 10 movies I watched on Netflix, made me want to ask Netflix for a return of my money- AND TIME WASTED!

And I'm ready to cancel everything on Cable but just the basic channels- for about the same reason!

YOUTUBE has set a new standard for movies that no other channel has been able to outdo.

First of all, they have more movies than anyone- BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY SUBSCRIBE- you can circumvent the dreadful interrupting advertising altogether.

All HBO and the other movie channels on Cable and Satellite TV can do is repeat the same old tired and worn-out movies over and over again that we have all seen 200 times now.

And all Netflix does is run movies that are not even in English that you have to read instead of watching that no one ever wanted to see in the first place.

Youtube seems to be the only answer!
