Report: Ukrainian S-300s Gain First-Ever Kills: Shoot Down Two NATO Aircraft Accidentally Over Romania

Perhaps the most notable precedent was the downing by an older Ukrainian S-200 system of Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 over the Black Sea in October 2001, which killed all 78 civilians onboard.

The history of the Azov Regiment, which is part of a larger political movement, is an awkward backstory in the country's defense forces

“The Azov Regiment is definitely a nasty crew,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “They’ve had a high neo-Nazi presence, there’s documented antisemitism.”

The track record of Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies in investigating murders and attacks on foreign nationals seeking refuge on Ukrainian territory has, up to now, been poor.

Vital Shyshou, the head of the Belarusian House in Ukraine, a non-profit helping people fleeing Belarus out of fear of political reprisals, was found hanged in a park, not far from his place of residence after he went missing during a morning jog. His mobile phone and personal belongings were with him.

The police have opened an investigation, which is considering the possibility that his death was a case of “murder disguised as a suicide”. According to Shyshou’s colleagues, he had noticed that he was being watched. They also state that they had received warnings of sinister plans by security services, which Shyshou brushed aside.

A number of political exiles have been killed or survived assassination attempts in Ukraine in recent years, including Belarusian journalist Pavel Sharamet (Sheremet) who was killed in 2016, former Russian State Duma Deputy Denis Voronenkov who was killed in 2017, Chechen refugee Adam Osmayev who survived two assassination attempts in 2017 and his wife Amina Okueva, who was killed the same year. The Ukrainian authorities have been heavily criticized by human rights organizations for failing to conduct effective and conclusive investigations.

Who's killing allies of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych?

April 17, 2015

The question haunting Kiev is this: Who might be murdering allies of Ukraine's ousted President Viktor Yanukovych?

The idea that this might be happening is not entirely new. But it muscled its way to the fore again this week with two high-profile shooting deaths in the Ukrainian capital -- one of a former member of parliament with ties to Yanukovych, the other of a Ukrainian journalist known for his pro-Russian views.

Oleg Kalashnikov, the former member of parliament, was shot and killed shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the entrance to his apartment block. Kalashnikov, 52, was a member of the Party of Regions, the former ruling party in Ukraine, and was close to Yanukovych. Police are investigating the death as a murder.

A day later, on Thursday, journalist Oles Buzyna, 45, was killed near his home by shots fired from a dark blue Ford Focus, Interior Ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said.

The killings renewed speculation, sparked by earlier unusual deaths, about a conspiracy to kill people close to Yanukovych. At least three former members of parliament with the Party of Regions have reportedly "committed suicide" in the last seven weeks/

Murders of pro-Russian lobbyists increase tension in Ukraine standoff

APRIL 16, 2015

A Ukrainian journalist known for his pro-Russian views was shot dead on Thursday in Kiev, a day after the killing of a political supporter of ousted Moscow-backed President Viktor Yanukovich, driving up tension between Moscow and Kiev.

The killing of Oles Buzina, who expressed strong pro-Russian views in a daily newspaper, and of ex-parliamentary deputy Oleh Kalashnikov were the latest in a spate of mystery deaths among allies of Yanukovich, who fled to Moscow last year.

On Wednesday evening, Kalashnikov, 52, a former member of parliament for Yanukovich’s Party of Regions, was shot dead as he went up to his eighth-floor apartment.

An interior ministry adviser said both victims played a part in the “Anti-Maidan” movement, which opposed pro-Western protests that ousted Yanukovich in February 2014 and were witnesses in criminal cases.

The Ukraine Detail Nobody’s Talking About

Events in Ukraine have seen interest resurface in the business dealings of the resident’s son with Ukraine, Russia and China. Is this yet another "vast right-wing conspiracy theory” that can no longer be dismissed?

Stepan Bandera...

Bandera has still been dead for 60+ years. I doubt he can be blamed for Russia invading the Ukraine. The last time he was involved in a war, it was WWII.

Bandera was an ethnic Ukrainian, but a citizen of Poland. Should we destroy Poland for his past existence too?
