Nato allies reject Trump’s demand for help to open Strait of Hormuz after threats

Nato allies have have cast doubt over the alliance’s role in reopening the Strait of Hormuz in a fresh blow to Donald Trump.

The US president had called for “about seven” countries to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning Nato that the bloc faces a “very bad future” if allies refuse to help the US open up the maritime chokepoint, which has been under Iranian control since the war began.

German foreign minister Johann Wadephul said: “I don't see that Nato has made any decision in this direction or could assume ‌responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz. If that ‌were the case, ‌then the Nato bodies would address it accordingly.”

The UK has also expressed an unwillingness to involve Nato, with Sir Keir Starmer saying that it “won’t be and it's never been envisioned to be a Nato mission.” Meanwhile, Greece has refused any military involvement in the Persian waterway and Italy has called for diplomacy to prevail.

Trump is now both begging and threatening to try and get help managing the threat in the Strait because his leadership team was so stupid they did not think to consult with allies prior and get them on board this plan, even if for only the post action part of policing the Strait.

This is absolutely predictable when you put the "poorly educated" magats in charge of anything. They think they can bully and act alone and when they find themselves in trouble they demand others bail them out with more bullying.

True. Trump did what Netanyahu wanted without even consulting with Nato allies.

Iran is going to let ships pass through the straight if they aren't affiliated with the United States.

China, India, Pakistan are going to receive safe passage. France and Italy are in discussion with Tehran for safe passage of their shipping.

The problem is Trump could pull back and just declare victory, but Iran could still keep the strait closed to American shipping.

i am not sure how that will work if Iran is mining the Strait, as some reporting suggests. Mines do not discriminate.

But for the other types of direct targeting with drones Iran could hold that fire, yes, but the mines would still be a threat.

When Bush started a war nobody wanted, he built a case for our normal allies. He had a long line that sent troops. Trump not only started a war nobody but Israel wanted, but he also gave our friendly countries no information. He launched a sneak attack. Now he demands that they should do what he demands. He does not respect sovereignty. They should follow Daffy Donald's orders. He is such a buffoon.

Looks like Iran is in a very good position to shove this ill-advised gambit right back up trump's ass.

By telling all those countries that their ships are safe and free to come and go as they please, they have removed any incentive for them to help trump.

So much for trump's supposed "4D chess".

Not to mention the insane tariffs he threatened them with.

Not to mention all the times he's bad-mouthed NATO and threatened to pull the US out, held them hostage for more money and generally treated them like a doormat.

Now he's on his hands and knees begging them for help.

Hollywood couldn't have written a simpler and more predictable TV show script. :palm:

Trump knows so little. He says America does not need the Hormuz oil. Therefore, closing the gulf will not hurt us. When you go to the gas station. you know that is wrong. Mr Businessman president does not know that the price of oil is determined in world markets. His war will jack up inflation in the grocery stores and heating. I wonder who he will blame for that.
Trumpy says Iran is begging for the war to stop. Yet he says they have no leaders. Then who is begging?

This is not a NATO mission. No one in the ME is a NATO ally. Trump started a war, put the US into a quagmire and then complains when no one helps him to get out of it.

A reporter asked why other countries should help secure the Strait of Hormuz.

Karoline Leavitt's answer was direct and devastating: 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘳𝘢𝘯.

Then she laid out exactly who benefited and how.
  • Iran struck more than 300 civilian targets across the Gulf region.
  • Iran's ballistic missile program — now being wiped out by the US military — was a direct and imminent threat to European allies and American bases alike.
  • Iran's nuclear program, left unchecked, was a threat the entire Western world agreed could never be allowed to succeed.
𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀.

Germany issued a statement declining to participate. Japan said it has made no decisions. Australia said it won't send ships. And yet every one of those countries just had an existential nuclear threat neutralized on their behalf by American pilots, American ships, and American taxpayers.

The ask now is simple: help keep the shipping lane open. The same shipping lane your economies depend on.

The same lane that Iran — the regime America just largely dismantled — is trying to choke off.

This isn't a request anymore. It's an invoice.

And as Trump made clear — 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘃𝘦𝘳 who paid it and who didn't.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿.

The relationship of Trump and Netanyahu is an odd one. I'm not one to jump on the bandwagon about the Jews controlling DC. I understand the military necessity of having a strong relationship with the only democracy in the ME. In many ways it's akin to supporting Britain as an unsinkable aircraft carrier in WWII.

That said, Trump's decision to go to war with Iran was most likely driven internal to the Trump WH much as the invasion of Iraq was due to internal machinations of the GW Bush WH. Both, of course, were stupid decisions driven by the greed of oil barons.

Crazy Trump has alienated our allies, so what can he expect.
