Nancy Pelosi Is an Effective Leader

I know people hate her for policy reasons and think she was a terribly Speaker of the House (I disagree), but this was a pretty solid move to highlight the deep divide that exists among the House Republican caucus and John Boehner's inability to herd the cats:

What was supposed to be a routine vote in the House -- to knock down an amendment authored by conservative Republicans -- turned into pandemonium on the House floor Friday, as Democrats tried to jam the plan through, and hang it around the GOP's necks.

The vote was on the Republican Study Committee's alternative budget -- a radical plan that annihilates the social contract in America by putting the GOP budget on steroids. Deeper tax cuts for the wealthy, more severe entitlement rollbacks.

Normally something like that would fail by a large bipartisan margin in either the House or the Senate. Conservative Republicans would vote for it, but it would be defeated by a coalition of Democrats and more moderate Republicans. But today that formula didn't hold. In an attempt to highlight deep divides in the Republican caucus. Dems switched their votes -- from "no" to "present."

Panic ensued. In the House, legislation passes by a simple majority of members voting. The Dems took themselves out of the equation, leaving Republicans to decide whether the House should adopt the more-conservative RSC budget instead of the one authored by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan. As Dems flipped to present, Republicans realized that a majority of their members had indeed gone on the record in support of the RSC plan -- and if the vote closed, it would pass. That would be a slap in the face to Ryan, and a politically toxic outcome for the Republican party.

So they started flipping their votes from "yes" to "no."

In the end, the plan went down by a small margin, 119-136. A full 172 Democrats voted "present."

John Boehner's got his hands full and it looks like he'll need some Democrats to get shit done. If he didn't realize it when the budget resolution passed without a majority of Republicans voting in favor, Pelosi let him know with this one.

She was and still is more effective than Boner will ever be! She doesn't cry as much, either!

way to go dems and reps, keep pissing us off with your petty antics. I look forward to more idiots losing their seats.

to be replaced by more idiots! Yeah, that just what we need at this point a bunch of inexperienced legislatures wrecking havoc with a system they don't understand. They are willing to let us flop to make their point. They are suicide bombers (figuratively speaking) that will do more harm than good, in my opinion.

the hope would be for the newbies to see just how fucked up all those career politicians made things so they can start peeling away all the crap. wouldn't a simpler system make sense to you?

Please don't hold your breath waiting for a third party, new system etc. My call is these newbies in time will hold out the palm for greasing soon enough.

Yes, but it seems to me the newbies have no idea how we fit in the system of things and that makes them dangerous. Think of what life would be like if our bond rating is crap!!!! Does Ryan understand economics and being an international player? Does he want the IMF to come in and take over?

Ryan is one of the three founding members of the House GOP Young Guns Program.

He attended Joseph A. Craig High School in Janesville and went on to graduate from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a B.A. in economics and political science in 1992 and is a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

He worked in the voluntary sector as an economic analyst for Empower America. Ryan worked as an aide to U.S. Senator Bob Kasten beginning in 1992 and as legislative director for Sam Brownback of Kansas from 1995 to 1997. He worked as a speechwriter to "drug czar" William Bennett and Jack Kemp during the latter's run for the vice presidency in 1996.

Committee assignments

  • Committee on the Budget (Chairman)
  • Committee on Ways and Means
  • Subcommittee on Health

they can hardly do worse than the establishment has already done and I seriously doubt that ANYONE will stand for the IMF interfering in our affairs. Especially if the newbies produce the massive spending cuts we want them to.

Do you think we will have a choice, what country has had a choice of the IMF coming in?
