Mother faces murder charge after 5-year-old shoots, kills herself

NewOrleans police have booked a 28-year-old St. Roch woman with second-degree murder after her 5-year-old daughter died from a self-inflicted gunshotwound she suffered Sunday morning in her home.


According to police spokespersonHilal Williams, the young girl was taken off life support and died late Sunday afternoon. The child's name has not been released bypolice.

Police booked Laderika Smith after sheadmitted she locked her daughter inside a bedroom alone at their home in the2200 block of North Galvez Street while the mother went to the store. When shereturned home, Smith found her daughter lying on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head. Police arrived about 11 a.m. and thechild was transported to the hospital.


A preliminary investigationindicates the child somehow found a .38-caliber revolver that was insidethe home and accidentally shot herself in the head, Williams said. Smith confessed to having agun inside the home, and police recovered the weapon.


Smith was originally booked withcruelty to a juvenile, but the charges were changed after the child died. According to police records today is Smith's birthday.

More like lack of effective gun control laws. Any parent of a child killed by an improperly secured gun should face first degree murder charges.

We do have effective gun control laws. How about parents taking responsibility, since when do you lock up a child in a room so you can go to the store.
 
New Orleans has some of the strictest gun control laws in the U.S. Again, laws established to keep guns out of the hands of black people, just like back in the 60's. This is exactly what should happen when a parent carelessly leaves a gun out. First degree murder is to excessive and if you actually READ and UNDERSTOOD the law you would get that.

First degree murder requires malice. There has to be an intent that the person killed be killed OR that when you were shooting at someone, with that intent, you shot and killed someone else. Leaving a gun out and loaded within the reach of a child is reckless disregard and does not amount to 1st degree murder.

Typical RacistX drivel, snarking over this tragedy because the parent is black. A black mother's charged with murder but in the white father's case, it was all just a tragic accident.

"The four-year-old boy of a sheriff’s deputy in northern Michigan accidentally shot and killed himself with a handgun at the family’s home over the weekend, state police said Monday.

Authorities believe Michael Easter was playing with the firearm when he shot himself one time on Saturday in Liberty Township, said First Lt. Michael Krumm of the state police. Police have sent evidence to a forensic lab for analysis but don’t think there was any criminal intent at play.

“At this point there is nothing that’s leading us to believe that this is anything more than a tragic accident,” Krumm said.

if the gun had not been there the child would still be alive.


If you are mad at her for leaving the child
alone in the house then maybe you should help poor single mothers more.

I can remember being a parent and having a napping child and wishing I could just run to the store real quick while they napped.

I never did but I was never desperate and maybe this mother was.

I must have missed the section where the white Mother locked the kid in a room while Mom went out to the store.

Two different set of circumstances....both avoidable.
