Russian missile cruiser Moskva has sunk in the Black Sea hours after Ukraine claimed to have dealt significant damage to the ship with a missile strike while Russian officials claimed the ship was still stable and any damage was due to a fire on board that caused some ammunition to detonate.

"During the towing of the Moskva cruiser to the port of destination, the ship lost its stability due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In the conditions of stormy seas, the ship sank," the Russian Defense Ministry announced through Russian state media outlet TASS.

The flagship Russian missile cruiser that caught fire off the coast of Ukraine and later sank has been one of the most recognizable symbols of Ukrainian resistance since the war broke out.

The Moskva gained notoriety on Feb. 24, the day Russia kicked off its invasion, when it was one of two ships that confronted a small contingent of Ukrainian guards on the tiny Black Sea outpost known as Snake Island. In an account that swiftly entered the Ukrainian war lexicon, the guards reportedly shouted at the ships to leave when ordered to surrender. :)

The Harpoon (RGM-84/UGM-84/AGM-84)is a U.S.-designed subsonic antiship cruise missile that has been in service since 1977. Numerous variants have been produced since its inception, including air-, ship-, and sub-launched versions. The Harpoon has also undergone multiple upgrades to improve its range and guidance. Losing the vessel, built in Ukraine during the Soviet era and named after the Russian capital, represents a major military setback and symbolic defeat for Russia as its troops regroup for a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine after stumbling in the north.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Moskva -- flagship of the country's Black Sea fleet -- was being towed to port when it "lost its stability due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In the conditions of stormy seas, the ship sank." The crew, usually totaling about 500, had been evacuated, the ministry said.

I made a grunch of "yellow gear" for it and the SLAM-ER that was derived from it while in the Navy...

You see that thing the missile is sitting on? I supervised the manufacture of those... The ones I made were yellow.
