More Americans Support Roe v. Wade Than Ever Before, According to a New Pew Poll

More than 2/3 of Americans. Take that, conservatives.

Sixty-nine percent of Americans now oppose overturning Roe v. Wade, according to a Pew Research Center report published Tuesday. This marks a six-point increase in public support for the 1973 Supreme Court decision since Pew last asked about it in 2013. It is also the highest level of approval for Roe v. Wade that national pollsters have measured since Gallup began asking about it in 1989.

The uptick in support for the ruling comes as Republican state legislators around the country introduce and pass bills violating women’s constitutional right to abortion and as the president-elect promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn the landmark decision...

...Since the election, anti-abortion elected officials have made it clear that Roe v. Wade’s popularity won’t stop them from trying to circumvent and overturn it. Donald Trump has promised to appoint “pro-life” judges to the Supreme Court, saying women can “go to another state” if Roe is overturned. Meanwhile, individual states like Ohio and Texas have passed laws that aim to limit access to abortions, even though the Supreme Court ruled last year in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt that states cannot restrict abortion without a valid medical rationale.

The latest Pew poll only highlights the gap between conservative lawmakers’ agenda and mainstream American sentiment on abortion.

If (and it's a big if) anything comes about on this it would only be to return it to being a state matter, not federal.

How do you reconcile "rights" for only half of the population and not for the other?

Do you also believe "rights" should be assigned by race as well as gender?

The right of the prospective mother comes at the loss to the child. Child could be any sex. And Clark Gable doesn't get to fling Scarlett down the steps to kill an inconveisn't badtard.

The GOP thinks there won't be much backlash on this.

It's one of those "awaken the giant" issues. If Roe ever gets overturned, they won't win an election for decades.

If it goes to the states they can and will do what their citizens want.

Abortion is the law of the land.....

the only problem conservatives have with the subject is taxpayer funding of it......abortion is a medical procedure and coverage should be between the patient and her insurance company ..... the taxpayer should not be in the picture at all....
..nor should the taxpayer be paying for pregnancy prevention for men or women....

If you don't want abortion then pay for IUDs or contraceptive implants for the poor. But I guess you don't want to do that either!

Over here more than 90% of abortions are chemical rather than surgical and are performed before the 12th week. So why isn't a drug like methotrexate or misoprostrol used more often in the US?

Your attitude doesn't make any sense anyway. Do you think that putting babies into care is a cheap option or an unwanted baby that grows up alienated and angry is beneficial to society?
