Matt Teter is no longer executive director of the state Democratic Party following his arrest on suspicion of domestic assault after an altercation with his boyfriend last month.

Teter parted with the party on Friday. His departure was confirmed on Saturday by Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party.

Teter and his boyfriend got into an argument in the early morning hours of Feb. 19, according to a St. Louis Police Department report. The police interview with the boyfriend was conducted in an emergency room at St. Louis University Hospital.

The boyfriend told police that Teter was upset with him for coming home at 2:30 a.m. The couple lived in Soulard, and that night was the neighborhood's big Mardi Gras celebration. The report says the argument escalated when Teter called the boyfriend's parents in Pennsylvania, and the boyfriend punched Teter in the stomach.

When Teter punched him back, the boyfriend threatened to call police, "which infuriated" Teter, according to the report. Teter then twice pushed his boyfriend's face into a wooden kitchen cabinet. The boyfriend told police that he was taken to the hospital to have his injuries treated at about 6 a.m. The report says the boyfriend had a "severe laceration" on his left eyebrow and a black-and-blue eye. It says he was cooperative about giving information "but was very hesitant on assisting with the prosecution of this incident."

Teter, 30, surrendered to police on Feb. 22. He had his attorney present and was booked on suspicion of domestic assault. The charge was taken under advisement. Teter was placed on unpaid leave from his job with the Democratic Party following reports of the assault. He did not immediately return a call for comment on Monday.

Teter, a Kansas City native, was named a year ago to head the daily operations of the state party. Susan Montee, former state auditor, chose him for the job after she stepped down as chairwoman of the party to run for lieutenant governor.

Prior to his job with the party, Teter was executive director of an agency that provides housing to at-risk AIDS patients in Philadelphia. He held a similar job in St. Louis with Doorways and prior to that was a campaign aide to Sen. Claire McCaskill when she was state auditor and running for governor.
