Mississippi Passes Controversial Religious Freedom Law

Sun Devil

Death and Taxes
Mississippi lawmakers passed a controversial religious freedom bill Tuesday that would allow state residents to sue over laws they claim impinge on their religious freedoms, as well as add the words “In God We Trust” to the state flag.

State action “shall not burden a person’s right to exercise of religion,” said the text of the law. The law clarifies “burden” to mean any action that “directly or indirectly constrains, inhibits, curtails or denies the exercise of religion by any person.”

Opponents of the measure have argued the law could be used to discriminate against gays and lesbians, the Washington Post reports, much like a measure that passed Arizona’s legislature earlier this year but was vetoed by Republican Governor Jan Brewer.

The bill was passed by wide margins in both the Mississippi House and Senate, The measure also adds the words “In God We Trust” to the state flag, a measure supported by Republican Governor Phil Bryant, who is also a proponent of the bill but has not yet signed it into law.

The American Civil Liberties Union opposes the bill, though some language that civil rights groups objected to was stripped from the final version.which are both controlled by Republicans."

It appears that the phrase separation of church and state lines are getting more blurry.

In theory, couldn't the company that makes the MS flag sue for adding "In God We Trust"? If so, that'd be hilarious.

these religious idiots keep poking the bear. eventually they are going to get all their shit shut down.

Also I just need to clarify, that in some muslim countries they also probably put religious phrases on their flags. It's not just christians that do this. It's really really important everyone understand that. We should make sure to always cover all our bases when discussing something.

I'm well aware of Muslim countries that do this, most notably Saudi Arabia's flag which contains the decleration of faith:

"There is no god but God and Muhammad is the messenger of God.."

But Saudi Arabia operates on a different political system than the U.S and personally, we have no business putting God on any of our currency.

I know you are man. i was just taking a pot shot at a certain few that anytime something religious comes up I get the nags needing to clarify the extent at which all religions do the same exact thing with the same exact frequency. they can't just have one thread about one segment of the population without having an aneurysm.

The gay civil rights movement was started so that people wouldn't be punished for what they are.

It's now progressed into a movement that seeks to punish people for being religious.

Isn't this flag business the same issue as the Ten Commandments controversy in Alabama? Didn't work out well for Roy Moore.

Yes, indeed, all religious fanatics are fucked up! There does that do it!

What do you think the correlation is between people who shit their pants about Sharia in the US and who support this type of bill? I think 1:1 is about right.

Idiots.

So the idiots in MS put forth a 'Religious Freedom' Law that at the same time adds 'In God we trust' to their state flag? Yep... that makes a lot of sense.
