Misogyny alive and well in Seattle

These men were downright nasty. What's up with that?

SEATTLE — It was major local news when the new City Council was seated here in January with a 5-to-4 majority of women.

It was even bigger news last week, when that new majority worked together for the first time — rejecting, in a 5-to-4 decision along gender lines, a land-use deal that would have paved the way for a sports arena intended to help lure major league professional basketball back to Seattle.

The resulting backlash was ugly, and swift

In hundreds of email messages and social media posts, the female Council members were attacked by people — practically all apparently men — who said they lacked intelligence and an understanding of the importance of sports because they are women. One Twitter poster simply used a four-letter graphic insult to define them. Another man, in a signed email, suggested they should all kill themselves and “rot in hell.” Other critics, in less violent but equally demeaning terms, addressed them as “ladies,” who should “go back to the kitchen.”

In a city where liberal views are all but assumed and sports passions run deep, the attacks quickly became as big an issue — or at least just as politically complicated — as the arena plan itself.

Some of the comments remind me of stuff that gets posted here.

The five women have received a barrage of sexist and violent threats against them since Monday’s vote.

“You have made this world a worse place by whoring yourselves out to the highest bidder,” one man wrote via email. “Each of you should rot in hell for what you took from me yesterday.”

“I TRULY pray for nothing but horrible things for each of you moving forward,” said the man, who was identified as Lynwood attorney Jason Feldman. “As women I understand you spend a lot of your time trying to please others (mostly on your knees) but I can only hope that you each find ways to quickly and painfully end yourselves.”

“I think someone should smash Kshama Sawant’s head into a brick wall,” one Twitter user wrote, referring to one of the City Council members by name.

No new franchise, no guarantee, sounds like this was a good decision, its unfortunate they were attacked because they were women.

I've heard on JPP the one about pleasing others, mostly on your knees. It takes a certain kind of mindset...

I'm not suggesting the attacks are ok but you have to understand the Seattle area and mindset of the sports fans. It's not like these people would have been ok if it was men who voted no. They would have been savagely attacked as well and told to gky. In other words the backlash from the fans would be the same for the male counsel members as it would be for the women counsel members.

So you say.

Did you read the one by the lawyer? I would expect that kind of thing from the average dunderhead but this guy is a professional who works with clients. I hope he gets hit in the wallet for that comment.

No, didn't see it. What comment was that?

I've read the article three times now and still don't see that quote in it.

Looks like Feldman's former firm is throwing him under the bus.
