Sigh.... no it's not Yurt. They are not 'patroling' anything. They are riding along with police officers to assist with soldiers who are being a huge pain in the ass and breaking military law.

I don't want the military to patrol my streets either. The good news for us is that the military ain't patrolling the streets.

i was 20 and 21 years old, do you think I had any interest in finding that out at that age? I would imagine that they had something worked out with the local authorities, probably along the lines of removing them after issuing a citation to save room in their cells for civilians.

The Posse Comitatus Act was enacted by Congress in 1878 as an effort to limit federal powers in the wake of Reconstruction. It prohibits the military from acting in a police role off of federal property.

What they can do is make their presence known and advise soldiers who might be on the verge of trouble. If one has had too much to drink, they can arrange transportation back to their unit.

But if they see genuine trouble, they will do what any other citizen should do, call the police, Steuber said.

“If we see something that’s obviously wrong, we’re not in the policing function,” Steuber said. “But by gosh, we’ll have cell phones and we can surely contact the police.”

That’s fine with Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren, who has wanted to see a Fort Benning patrol downtown for a while.

“It gives us more presence downtown by having the military people there,” Boren said. “Their sole responsibility will be that courtesy patrol. They can monitor the military personnel and it also shows a partnership between the Columbus Police Department and the military police.”

Establishing a good relationship with the city was one reason Fort Benning’s commander, Maj. Gen. Robert Brown, agreed to institute the program, Steuber said. But he also had an economic motive.

“It’s a good initiative and one more way to be a good neighbor,” Steuber said. “Also, Gen. Brown said if we help just one soldier we will have done our job.”
Saving that one soldier could save taxpayers about a quarter of a million dollars, according to Steuber, who said that’s the total cost of outfitting and training a soldier, and the value his experience adds to his unit and the Army."
