(CNN)Donald Trump flew into a nation he has constantly berated during his campaign to meet President Enrique Peña Nieto and said they discussed a wall he has vowed to build on the US's southern border, but not his demand that Mexico pay for it -- an assertion the Mexican president later disputed.

"At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall," Peña Nieto tweeted, after their meeting Wednesday.

He added that his conversation with the Republican nominee then moved on to other topics in a respectful fashion.Jason Miller, Trump's senior communications adviser, called the meeting "the first part of the discussion and a relationship builder" between the two men, after Peña Nieto tweeted.

"It was not a negotiation, and that would have been inappropriate. It is unsurprising that they hold two different views on this issue, and we look forward to continuing the conversation," he said in a statement.

Mexico's Pena Nieto tweet "At the start of my conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall" !!

Vicente Fox had some harsh words for both Trump and Nieto:

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox said on Wednesday morning that Donald Trump is "not welcome to Mexico" and apologized for current Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto's invitation.
"We don't like him. We don't want him. We reject his message," Fox said in a CNN interview.

He added: "I don't understand why President Peña has offered this opportunity. I think it's nothing more than a political stunt. Trump is using Mexico, is using President Peña to boost his sinking poll numbers."

Fox said Peña Nieto needs to force Trump to apologize for "stupid proposals" like starting a trade war with Mexico and the deportation force. Asked about the Trump campaign's recent waffling on key tenants of his immigration pitch to Republican primary voters, Fox said he still didn't believe Trump.

"You cannot trust a guy like this. How can we grant confidence and support to ideas that change every day?" Fox said.

this is what matters. It shows Trump as "presidential" -able to meet 1 on 1 looking like a player.

^ money shot.

There is a question if the Trumpkins will leave Trump if he softens his positon. Where are they going to go?

See what the speech says..but this was a very good move/day for Trump

Shaking hands makes him look like a player? I'm not seeing it. It's just routine courtesy.

He looks like an orange sherbet with cotton candy topping.

The USA gives Mexico over $200 million in aid each year, that would help pay for it. As would a levy on all who pass through the border from Mexico.

I don't know if the Mexican president doesn't get that Trump isn't proposing to levy a tax on Mexicans in Mexico lol. Or whether this was just political posturing on his part.

If it's the former he's going to look pretty silly if it gets 'paid for by Mexico'.
