Media notices EVs weigh a buttload, EV makers are losing their butts

How they chew up our roads and cause problems for parking structures and bridges will be noticed soon, when the reality can no longer be avoided.

I believe the Rivian truck weighs over 8500 pounds.....Put 50 of those on one level of a parking garage or one hit your 2600 pound Prius at 70 MPH

Norway is the leading nation in terms of EV's in use with something like 80% of the vehicles in the country being EV now. Norwegian ferry lines that connect it to the rest of Europe have now banned EV's from being brought on board.

BLANKET BAN ON EVS BY NORWEGIAN FERRY LINE
https://www.energystoragejournal.co...cy, according to chief executive Bent Martini.

This means if you live in Norway and want to take your EV car to Germany you have to drive to Finland or Sweden and then take a ferry to mainland Europe from there--at least until they ban them too.

The reason for the ban is the ferry owners don't want their insurance to skyrocket in cost due to the potential fire hazard EV's represent being onboard.

EV's are much heaver than ICE's too.

"The Ford F-150 Lightning will weigh about 1,600 pounds more than a similar gas-powered F-150 truck.
Similarly, the electric Volvo XC40 Recharge weighs about 1,000 pounds more than a gas-powered Volvo XC40."

That extra weight, despite being safer for it's own occupants, pose a greater risk of injury to passengers of a
ICE vehicle in a crash. The heavier vehicle also causes more wear on roadways than ICE vehicles do too.

It Will Be Years Before EVs Are As Affordable As Gas-Powered Vehicles, Auto Exec Says

Ford CEO Jim Farley told investors on Wednesday that electric vehicles would likely continue to be more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts until after 2030 at the earliest, Reuters reported.

While some industry analysts have predicted costs could come down as soon as 2025, Farley has taken a more conservative approach and estimates that at least two more generations of EV technology — likely to enter production late in the current decade — for labor and production costs to decline far enough for EVs and gas-powered cars to reach price parity, according to Reuters. Ford lost just over $60,000 on each electric vehicle it sold in the first three months of 2023, in part due to the high fixed costs of vehicle production

The Rivian weights 7148 lbs. A Ford F150E (the Lightning EV) weighs 6500 lbs. A gasoline F150 weighs 4021 lbs.
Sources: Rivian and Ford specification sheets.

Parking structures must be built to handle 40lbs/ft^2 and 56lbs/ft^2 on top areas exposed to snow load to comply with current building code.
The footprint of a parking stall is typically 9x18, which means a F150 gasoline truck parked there presents only 29lbs/ft^2 to the structure.
A Rivian parked there presents 44lbs/ft^2, which exceeds the minimum code requirements for parking structures.
A Ford F150E (the Lightning) presents 41lbs/ft^2, just over the code requirements.

In other words, a parking garage built to code could not handle the weight of Rivians parked in it. It would collapse.
A parking garage build to code could not handle the weight of F150E (Lightning) trucks parked in it. It would collapse (but take longer to do it).
If all Ford F150 gasoline trucks were parked in it. It could easily handle the load...well within limits.

Nope. The heaviest cars on the road, by far are ICEs. https://weightofstuff.com/15-heaviest-cars-in-the-world/

You forgot to mention that the Ford EV pickup towing a load, has a 95 mile range.

From your link;

"But there’s more to it than that. Some of these cars are part of history, and evoke images of bygone eras, of world wars, of stunning opulence and gangster get-aways amid a hail of bullets."

"These behemoths wouldn’t qualify for “Green Car” parking spaces in today’s society. In fact, many wouldn’t even fit between the yellow lines in most shopping center parking lots. These were the toys of the aristocrats, for whom size profoundly mattered and for whom big cars were an icon of their pedigree."

Few of those are in production today. Those that are, are hand built exotics and far from your or my price range. Comparing them to recent production electric automobiles is asinine. Duh!

They are on the road. However, the point in there are plenty of ICEs that far outweigh EVs. If the behemoths and RVs that people are driving are not tearing up the roads, then neither are EVs. The premise is ridiculous. You certainly can go to a dealer and buy an ICE that outweighs EVs by tons.

Compare vehicles of the same size and see what you come up with. You're comparing apples to oranges. Are you really that ignorant?
