Mitch McConnell said Trump 'put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger' on January 6 and was 'pretty thoroughly discredited' by the attack, book says

In the immediate hours after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was reportedly optimistic that the violent riot had finally discredited former President Donald Trump.

"I feel exhilarated by the fact that this fellow finally, totally discredited himself," McConnell told New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin in the hours after the attack, adding that Trump was "was pretty thoroughly discredited by this."

That's according to an excerpt from "This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America's Future," a forthcoming book from Martin and fellow Times reporter Alex Burns, that was reported by the Washington Post on Monday.

"He put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger," said McConnell, reportedly standing in a doorway of the Capitol after midnight. "Couldn't have happened at a better time."

not surprising. whatever one thinks of the wall (and to me it's looking more and more needed with Brandon running immigration) - McConnell and Ryan both talked Trump out of passing it during Trump's first 2 years.
They wanted their tax cut, and did not want to disturb the status quo = "the Swamp"

This is why people like me love Trump -he's the anti-Swamp. It's also why he's hated -a threat to the Swamp

According to the book, McConnell also called Trump a "despicable person" in a meeting with staffers late into the evening after the attack.

"I feel exhilarated by the fact that this fellow finally, totally discredited himself," McConnell told New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin in the hours after the attack.

Asked in a Fox News interview Feb. 2021 whether he would support Trump running again in 2024, McConnell replied: “Absolutely.”

Looks like he changed his mind. :)

The investigation will go on TV soon. When the crimes that Trump plotted will come out for all to see. There are plenty of posters here who will refuse to believe it, but there are some who will learn and be disgusted. TRump lost the election last time. If his support is eroded further, he would be a joke. He actually is now among people in politics.

McConnell knows trump has damaged America, but does not realize how bad the damage is. It is going to be tough to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. There is a real danger that political violence will keep getting worse.

McConnell knows politics…

McConnell does know politics. But he badly miscalculated what would happen in the aftermath. McConnell, like almost every other Republican member of Congress, is a coward. He wanted someone else to do the dirty work. No one appears to be willing. Democracy dies with a whimper.

Yeah we know Mitch hates Trump and would like to see him gone. It's not happening.

If he died tomorrow, his legacy would be one of overwhelming success.

He succeeded in destroying the courts, and severely hobbling democracy.

As planned.

I hope he dies a horrible death. Perhaps while dining with trump?
