McCain today voted for a bill which would increase moneys available to vets for college. Anyone think that the REAL reason Bush and McCain oppose this has less to do with economics and more to do with the fact it will discourage re-enlistments?

you know that McCain co-sponsored a bill that was incremental in it's deposit of benefits, benefiting retention, and the soldier, but the Democrats refused to compromise, and once more played politics with a with our troops, trying to get McCain in some gotcha vote to say McCain doesn't support the troops, on some bill that will be vetoed. Another Democrat controlled Congressional waste of time.

You said he voted for it but was against it? I'm not sure you wrote this quite right.

It won't be vetoed. 75 to 22. That is veto proof.

Yeah, damn Democrats pushing a bill supported by 75 Senators refusing to compromise with McCain on an issue on which few agreed with him. What's their fucking problem?

LOL

Obama got bitch slapped by McCain for his comments.

Obama -

"I respect Sen. John McCain's service to our country," Obama said on the Senate floor this morning. "He is one of those heroes of which I speak. But I can't understand why he would line up behind the president in opposition to this GI Bill. I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the president more on this issue."

McCain -

"It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of. Let me say first in response to Senator Obama, running for President is different than serving as President. The office comes with responsibilities so serious that the occupant can't always take the politically easy route without hurting the country he is sworn to defend. Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.

"I know that my friend and fellow veteran, Senator Jim Webb, an honorable man who takes his responsibility to veterans very seriously, has offered legislation with very generous benefits. I respect and admire his position, and I would never suggest that he has anything other than the best of intentions to honor the service of deserving veterans. Both Senator Webb and I are united in our deep appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives so that the rest of us may be secure in our freedom. And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.

"Perhaps, if Senator Obama would take the time and trouble to understand this issue he would learn to debate an honest disagreement respectfully. But, as he always does, he prefers impugning the motives of his opponent, and exploiting a thoughtful difference of opinion to advance his own ambitions. If that is how he would behave as President, the country would regret his election."

Bitch-slapped? Looks like some name-calling and a temper-tantrum from a cranky old man on the wrong side of the issue. Typical McCain bullshit.

As an aside, I think it's cute of McCain to use his military service as a shield while criticizing Obama for not serving as if his service lets him off the hook for selling out troops. It's an odd line of attack though considering that McCain is one of very few veterans in the Senate to come out against the bill and the only Senator to have served in combat to come out against the bill.

Then again, he's also the only Senator that is the grandson and son of Admirals and is married to a beer barronness so he didn't really need the GI bill to afford an education or the VA to get decent healthcare.

I don't understand how they can approve billions to build iraqi schools and roads, and deny an expansion of benefits for vets.

Maybe the free market can take care of the vets?

Lazy bastards need to pull themselfs up by their own bootstraps.

So much for supporting our troops if it includes more than a yellow magnent on your SUV.

Personally, I'm in favor of a tax credit for Vets, so they can buy health insurance on the open market, or pay for education. That way, we can get rid of the VA, and federal educational grants for Vets.

Tax credits would be great. They could buy insurance and get an education with their 1,200 tax rebates.

Actually, the part about Obama not having served is a bullshit argument, because McCain has come to the rescue several times of members of the Administration who are chicken hawks and never served, but have no reservations getting other men and women involved in what SecDef Cheney once called a quagmire.
