These Michigan party promoters turned Dr. King’s dream into an absolute nightmare.
A boneheaded booster photoshopped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s head onto the body of a man wearing a gold chain and throwing up hand gestures to advertise a holiday party at a Flint event hall.
“I couldn't believe it, I thought it was a joke,” Victor McEwen, 41, owner of the Social Network Banquet and Event Center, told the Daily News on Wednesday.
The flier, created by promoter group Mid-Michigan Teen Parties, billed the event as a chance to express one unalienable right that wasn't part of King’s agenda: the “Freedom 2 Twerk.”
The outrageous advertisement has sparked national outrage and angered King’s kin in Atlanta. “For [the promoter] to think that this is okay, that this is what we have to stoop to appeal to our youth is completely ridiculous,” McEwen said. “It's just ignorant.”
Bernice King, the daughter of the late civil rights leader, called the image “appalling” and “almost embarrassing,” in an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta.
"For me, as his daughter, it's like 'wow', I lost a father who sacrificed everything for them to live a much more dignified and respectful life, and for it to come to this makes me sad,” she told the station.
