MAGA Splits Over Trump’s Calls to End Filibuster: ‘Tread Lightly’

Just me and my boo crew

President Donald Trump’s MAGA supporters appeared split after he called on the Senate to scrap the filibuster to clear the way for the end of the federal government shutdown.

"THE CHOICE IS CLEAR—INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION,’ GET RID OF THE FILIBUSTER," Trump wrote on his Truth Social site on Thursday.

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment via email.

Why It Matters

The filibuster is a long-standing procedural rule that allows senators to delay or block a vote on legislation by extending debate indefinitely.

It requires 60 votes in a full Senate to overcome a filibuster, giving Democrats a check on the 53-seat Republican majority. The filibuster has long been viewed as a way to encourage bipartisanship in Congress and guard against political dominance by slim majorities in the upper chamber.

What To Know

Trump called to end the filibuster so that Republicans can bypass Democrats and end the federal government shutdown, which began on October 1.

In another post on Truth Social, Trump said one question that kept coming up during his tour of Asia this week was "how did the Democrats SHUT DOWN the United States of America, and why did the powerful Republicans allow them to do it?"

Democrats are insisting that any deal must include an extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits that have made health insurance more affordable for millions of people since the COVID-19 pandemic. The subsidies are slated to expire at the end of the year if Congress doesn’t extend them. Republicans say those negotiations can happen after the government is funded.

Meeting Democrat demands will "hurt American citizens, and Republicans will not let it happen," Trump said.

He added that getting rid of the filibuster "would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying ‘SHUT DOWN.’"

Many Trump supporters welcomed his call, with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene saying that it was what she had "called for from the very beginning."

However, other Trump supporters disagreed.

@DisrespectedThe, a MAGA ally with 80,000 followers on X, warned Republicans: "Tread lightly. These maniacs will eventually regain control, and when they do, America is over. Let's think long and hard about this one."

What People Are Saying

Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It is now time for the Republicans to play their "TRUMP CARD," and go for what is called the Nuclear Option—Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!"

He added that if Republicans "did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying SHUT DOWN." If the Democrats ever came back into power, which would be made easier for them if the Republicans are not using the Great Strength and Policies made available to us by ending the Filibuster, the Democrats will exercise their rights, and it will be done in the first day they take office, regardless of whether or not we do it."

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X: "Thank you Pres Trump! This is what I called for from the very beginning. Since Democrats REFUSE to fund the government, Senate Republicans need to use the nuclear option and override the filibuster!! Enough of the drama. Stop forcing people to suffer and LEAD the country!!"

House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Friday: "What you’re seeing is an expression of the president’s anger at the situation."

He added that the filibuster "has traditionally been viewed as a very important safeguard. If the shoe were on the other foot, I don’t think our team would like it."

X user @JakeCan72, a MAGA supporter with more than 60,000 followers, wrote: "Ending the 60-vote cloture rule—the so-called "nuclear option"—might sound like a shortcut to fund the government or push MAGA priorities. It’s not. It’s a trap … End it now, and if Democrats take power, they’ll ram through wealth taxes, gun bans, and open-border spending—with no brake pedal. The filibuster is the only thing forcing both sides to compromise."

Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah wrote on X: "The filibuster forces us to find common ground in the Senate. Power changes hands, but principles shouldn’t. I’m a firm no on eliminating it."

What’s Next

It remains to be seen whether lawmakers will follow Trump’s lead and move to eliminate the filibuster or seek ways to negotiate with Democrats to end the government shutdown.

Trump really is an idiot as he keeps proving to the world. He's a joke in both Japan and China.

He knows he's dying and couldn't care less what happens after he's gone which is why he's taking a wrecking ball to both the White House, our Constitution and pushing things like "the nuclear option"...including using real nukes.

i hope they do kill the filibuster to do this.

Trump and the magats are going to be lose the midterms and GE unless Trump succeeds in stealing the elections (and he might), and if he does the filibuster does not matter anyway because if they do steal it the filibuster would not slow them imposing what they want at all.

The filibuster being gone will only help the Dems in that future as the Corporate Dems would use the filibuster, over and over as the reason why the populist things they promise in elections cannot be delivered after.

Last I heard republican lawmakers were not excited by the idea.
