Many members, of South Africa's Black majority have told journalists that they believe life under the apartheid regime was better than it is now.
The (White-minority) National Party ( apartheid) governments that ruled South Africa from 1948 to 1994, although they were, for decade, excoriated by the international community ( in particular, America and other Western nations) for the brutality and inhumanity of their racist apartheid ; they were at least able to provide competent government, fulfilling all the duties and responsibilities demanded by any modern State. For example...
* They were prudent, and wise managers of the South African economy, which steadily grew between 1948 and 1994.
* Infrastructure (like roads) was alway promptly repaired and well-maintained.
* State-owned companies like ESKOM (electricity), TRANSNET (the South African rail network and South African Airways (SAA) were rated among the very best services in the world. The Postal service was reliable and efficient. Likewise the supply of potable water to households across the state
* The quality of education provided in public schools (both for Blacks and Whites) was very good
* The rate of unemployment was very low, with ample job opportunities for everyone.
* The rate of crime (violent and property) was effectively zero due to tough but brutally effective law-enforcement; and provided a very high level of public safety and security
* There were affordable public housing schemes provided for black.
* The provision of public healthcare was was good
* For the majority of ordinary South Africans, the essential necessities of life (i.e. groceries) were affordable and all working families could afford to put dinner on the table every night.
South Africa under the rule of the (White Minority) Afrikaner National Party was not a utopia. I'm not suggesting that it was. I'm not suggesting that the government always behaved in a completely ethical manner it didn't. What I'm pointing out is that between 1948 and 1994 they managed to run the country in a very sound manner. People (Blacks and Whites) had jobs, almost everyone could afford the necessities of life, everyone had access to cheap and reliable electricity, there was next to no violent crime (murder, rape, kidnapping, car-jacking, etc) parents could let their children play outdoors, public schools ( for both Blacks and Whites) actually taught students the basics effectively.
Ultimately the rule of the (White minority) Africaner National Party came to an end in 1994. The National Party is best remembered for its policy of apartheid, this was the policy of separating the varous different racial groups that comprised the population of South Africa. The larest of these groups were the native Black Africans or "Bantus They had always been the largest ethnic-racial group in South Africe, today , for example, they make up 81% of South Africa's population. Under apartheid they were forced by law to live separately from those region where the Whie (Afrikaner and English speaking ) resided. In addition apartheid laws: banned Blacks from voting in state elections, prohibited them from having sex with, or marrying White South Africans and denied them citizenship (along with a number of other legal restrictions.
The National Party regime was increasing condemned for its apartheid policies, which were viewed by the liberal world as being profoundly racist and violating numerous Human Rights There were numerous boycotts and sanctions placed on South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s, for example, along with repeated condemnations from the UN . There was also trenchant resistance from Blacks in and around South Africa in the form of the African National Congress (ANC) ( an anti-apartheid political organisation and their paramilitary wing "MK" Who had been increasingly active since 1960 (and were heavily - backed by the Soviet Union).
For these and other reasons the National Party began to "voluntarily" dismantle itself during the early 1990s. This lead to a national democratic election being held in 1994 which was won by the Black ANC Party led by Nelson Mandela. (Hardly surprising given 80% of the population were Black and blamed apartheid for all their woes Mandela thus became the first Black President of the new Democratic Republic of South Africa .
The ANC had promised the majority Black population that they would create a new "Rainbow Nation" from the ashes of apartheid. It would be a land of "milk and honey" - a virtual multicultural utopia of peace, brotherly love, justice , equality and prosperity for all. And the Black African majority in South Africa - having an average IQ a little below 70 points) and zero education) eagerly swallowed it all (just like Monica Lewinski used to
)
FROM "RAINBOW NATION" TO "HELL'S KITCHEN" IN 30 SHORT YEARS
When the Afrikaner National Party were ousted in 1994, the ANC replaced them and the whole country went down the gurgler. So much for the notion that Blacks can govern themselves... Which explains why they were not permitted to vote in state elections during the apartheid era.
