In a make-or-break moment, Gary Johnson broke.

During an interview in which Johnson would later say he mentally “blanked,” the Libertarian Party presidential nominee on Thursday flubbed a question on the Syrian civil war, asking, “What is Aleppo?”

His fellow panelists were agape, as Johnson had just claimed unfamiliarity with a city at the heart of Syria’s ongoing civil war.

Johnson spent the rest of the morning on a self-flagellating apology tour, including a brief follow-up interview with Mark Halperin in which Johnson admitted frustration at his answer, an appearance on "The View," and a statement of public mea culpa.

It came at a particularly inopportune time for Johnson’s campaign. Johnson has hung much of his campaign strategy on qualifying for the presidential debate, and the next few weeks of polling will determine who makes the stage.

they were "agape" because they saw the prospects of Johnson stealing votes from Trump go out the window

For the record, Johnson isn't a libertarian. He is a faux liberal propping himself up as a libertarian. Maybe he thought they were just going to ask him about pot?

:dunno:

The 2016 election is Gary Johnson’s last chance to be president.

“This is my last shot at this, OK?” the former New Mexico governor said during a meeting with the USA TODAY editorial board on Wednesday. “I won’t be around after this election.”

So Johnson is going to give this election everything he has, even if that means ultimately helping elect Donald Trump president.

“Spoiler? Great, give me the title,” Johnson said, before adding that he doesn’t think that will be the case.

The Libertarian candidate — whose RealClearPolitics polling average is about 9% — thinks that moderate Democrats and Republicans may not say his name publicly, but they will check the box in the voting booth.

Johnson did not take well to a question about how he would feel if he went down in history as “this year’s Ralph Nader.”

I THINK GARY HAS ALREADY EXPLORED SPACE

Gary Johnson might want to study up about Earth before worrying about other planets.

The Libertarian Party presidential nominee — who earlier this month infamously failed to recognize the Syrian city of Aleppo during a nationally televised interview — said Sunday that the human race will ultimately be forced to live on other planets.

"I mean, the plate tectonics at one point, Africa and South America separated and I am talking now about the Earth and the fact that we have existed for billions of years and will going forward," the gaffe-prone former New Mexico governor said on ABC's "This Week."

"We do have to inhabit other planets. I mean, the future of the human race ... is space exploration. So, no, we should be prudent with the environment. We care about the environment," he said.

Earlier Johnson misspoke when he said he was glad that "nobody got hurt" in the Chelsea explosion and Minnesota stabbing attacks that left dozens of people injured.

In fact, the bombing in Chelsea injured 29 people and the stabbing in a Minnesota mall — which ISIS later claimed — injured eight people, and ended with police killing the attacker.

"Well, first of all, just grateful that nobody got hurt," Johnson said last week on CNN's "Reliable Sources."
