Lerner again takes the Fifth in IRS scandal

Former IRS official Lois Lerner again declined to answer any questions Wednesday when she appeared before a House committee investigating the tax agency's extra scrutiny of applications from conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

House Republicans had summoned Lerner to testify before Congress on Wednesday, more than nine months after she invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has argued that she waived her rights at that May 22 hearing when she made an opening statement — noting she had done nothing wrong — and answered one question about a document that had been entered into the record.


In response to a series of pointed questions from Issa on Wednesday, Lerner repeatedly said, "On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question." Over the weekend, Lerner's attorney had apparently been negotiating with the committee over a possible deal that would have allowed her to testify, which had raised the possibility that she would speak Wednesday.


After about 15 minutes, Issa adjourned the hearing.


"I can see no point in going further," he said, saying it was clear Lerner was not going to cooperate.

Who's going to lock her up and what should she be charged with?

This whole thing is now a ruse. Issa, having found no intentional wrongdoing notwithstanding months and months of investigation, brings her back so she can take the fifth so he can pretend that, but for her invocation of the privilege, he'd have found something. What a joke.

Contempt of Congress....its obvious see thinks she will open herself up for criminal charges...you all can't be that stupid and naive..

I can't figure out why they don't just call other staff in the IRS.... L L sent the incriminating emails to someone, call them them and see if you
can get some answers there.....

Well, there are quite a few steps between invoking the 5th and contempt of Congress. Also, members of Congress have accused her of criminal conduct. The DOJ is conducting an investigation into the matter. Under the circumstances, what she thinks is irrelevant. She has been accused of criminal activity and there is an open criminal investigation into the matter. She has every right to take the 5th under the circumstances.

Why plead the fifth if you have nothing to hide?
