Author Joseph Conrad's famous novella, "The Heart of Darkness"(1899) was used as a foundation for the 1979 Hollywood film, "Apocalypse Now." It was a very successful movie and has never became passe, in the sense, for example, that it is still regarded as "cool" by teenagers who watch it today - over 40 years since it was first released.
I have been watching all of the Senate confirmation hearings for Biden's Supreme Court justice nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson carefully. And the closer I studied her interviews with the various Republican Senators, the more morally sickened I became. I thought I could finally understand the famous dying whispers of the character Kurz in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness. As he dies, Kurz says in a whispery, but comprehensible voice - "The Horror ! The Horror !" "The Horror" Kurz is referring to was IMO his exposure the unspeakable violence, degradation, enslavement and exploitation of the native Congolese Africans by the colonists who created the Belgian Congo in the 19th century. This is why Kurz is described as being mentally (and physically) ill the novel when he is discovered by Marlow - another agent of the same Belgian colonial company - who have directed him to find Kurz after rumors surface that he has disappeared deep into the Congo jungle and is behaving in ways the Company fear could jeopardize its entire venture in the Congo. Dead Right !
