Jill Biden and Women's Hoops

For those who don't follow women's college basketball (which I'm sure is most/all of us) Jill Biden attended the woman's championship game Sunday where LSU (and Angel Reese) beat Iowa (and Caitlyn Clark). I have never watched a woman's game in my life but Caitlyn Clark got so much hype for her exploits I actually tuned into it. Long story short Angel, who is black, and Caitlyn, who is white, rival any men for their trash talking ability. And the trash talking Angel did after the game directed towards Caitlyn garnered national attention (Caitlyn had done similar acts to opponents in prior games).

We all know victorious championship teams get invited to the White House (well except for maybe during the Trump years). Jill Biden tweeted that the losers, Iowa, should be invited as well because they played such a good game. That alone is a face palm because why do women need the equivalent of participation trophies? But what set off the fire storm is the racial component and Biden is getting crushed for being so tone deaf. There is already talk that LSU and Angel would turn down the White House if Iowa is invited and go visit the Obama's instead. Listing to 'urban radio' this morning a couple of folks asked why wouldn't Jill Biden have some black folks in her ear before tweeting something out like that?

The women's college game has rarely, if ever, gotten this much attention so there's something to be said for that. But you could hear it in the DJ's voice this morning like the Biden's better clear this up before pissing off too many black folks.

I hope she invites them both... no let me change that... I pray she invites them both;)

I haven't followed any kind of basketball since Bill Russell retired.

If I were president, there would be no invited sports teams, no pardoned turkeys, no White House lawn Christmas tree lighting ceremonies,
or any of that other hokey bullshit.

I'd put in an honest day's work, and I wouldn't do it for a lousy four hundred grand, either.

The American peoples' capacity to put up with nonsense seems depressingly infinite.

Watched game, watched most of the women’s tournament, basketball junkie. Referees played way too big a role in the game, LSU came out playing football, and the referees allowed it, probably because they were intimidated by the coach. Same game plan that took SDSU to the finals, although UCONN just beat it down Court. Clark’s technical, plus the LSU coach allowed to physical interfere with a referee were bizarre

There was some stink raised about the LSU player’s reaction given nothing was said when Clark did the same thing earlier in Iowa’s game with Louisville. However, hitting on Jill Biden inviting both teams to the White House is petite, and can’t say I’ve seen anyone raise the topic

Now maybe someone can teach West Coast schools how to play basketball

Angel Reese tweeted this out. That’s why it’s getting the national attention it is. That’s why you have (progressive black) DJs talking about it on the air like I referenced.

I only watched a portion of the girl's game. Heard a lot of people complaining about the referring and that this game was such a showcase for women's basketball and the ref's ruined it.

No denying that since 1999 UConn has been the best college basketball program in the country (at least if national championships is the measurement.) I've never liked them though. Maybe it's being too close to Boston but I'm not a fan. I was hoping State could pull it off but no such luck.

Angel Reese followed around a player taunting after the game was over. This is why people are calling her out for being trash

Less people care that an athlete talks trash during the heat of the competition. All the greats did - Larry Bird and so forth.

Sadly, the issue here is the best basketball player in women's sport is a white girl, and apparently that is not sitting well with some

Last one for you and I say this in no way to attack you or attempting to be disrespectful, I just think it makes for an interesting discussion.

Often racial issues get broken down along political lines but not always, and I think the latter is the case here. You're an older white male who is a Democrat and your thought about this Jill Biden issue was basically me just being a partisan and trying to attack her for something. Nationally, there's been a huge debate/discussion over the Caitlyn Clark and Angel Reese trash talking and how the media and public views it and how race paints those viewpoints (Angel being attacked because she is black.) Then on top of that you have Jill Biden doing something that's probably never been done and that's inviting the losing team to the White House. You see no problem with that but black people are thinking 'there's a racial double standard being applied to the trash talking and now the losing team with the star white player is being invited to the White House which has never been done before'.

Thus the DJ's this morning talking about Jill Biden being tone deaf to what black people are thinking and the need for black people to review her tweets before they go out. (we've heard this argument made for corporate America as well, that they need black/minority people to review ads etc. before they go out.)

Caitlyn Clark was doing the 'U Can't C Me' trash talk to others in previous games so I have no issue with it being done back to her. If you talk trash you have to be able to take it. But yeah, I also thought the following around the court to do it was excessive. At the same time I can't get worked up over it either.

yes - getting into a players head during the game has always been a thing

this is not that though. The game was over. instead of lining up to shake hands, Reese followed her around taunting.

Nobody faults Angel Reese for her "Too Small" taunt after she posts up in the paint - in game taunts are part of the game and have been for a long long time

Still say it is looking for something that just isn’t there, other than you repeating it, and the kid’s tweet, I have not heard anything regarding LSU being dissed by inviting Iowa, nor, consequently the portrayal of Jill Biden as being naive as to racism.

Too bad, you should have went to a game, nothing like the UCONN fans sporadically staring their UCONN chant, especially in Madison Square Garden, sounded like nails on a chalkboard for opposing team’s fans

And how come your dissing Boston? One of my favorite cities, could go there just to eat

How many black folks do you read or listen to? Because I don't know what to tell you, it's out there. Read the tweets from this article.

LSU players scoffed at Jill Biden's Iowa White House invite. The First Lady walked it back.

Boston is my least favorite City in America. I hate it with a passion. (and it has nothing to do with politics) I hate the weather, I hate the accents, I hate the sports teams, I especially hate the fans, the women are not attractive. Yes, it has great history. And yes, it is very neighborhood driven like San Francisco. But I've always hated that City, then I lived there for work for nine months back in 2008 and it just reinforced how much I dislike it.

It's a very parochial City and was just not my cup of tea in the least.
