Japan raises severity of nuclear accident to level of Three Mile Island

YAMAGATA, Japan (AP) — The Japanese government acknowledged Friday that it was overwhelmed by the scale of last week's twin natural disasters, slowing the response to the nuclear crisis that was triggered by the earthquake and tsunami that left at least 10,000 people dead.

California seeing no radiation level increase

VIENNA/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – California air quality officials said on Friday they saw no elevated radiation levels on the U.S. West Coast from Japan's nuclear power plant disaster.

"At this point we're unable to verify if there are any elevated levels," said Ralph Borrmann, a spokesman for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in San Francisco. "We're not seeing it on our live data in California."

sorry yurt haters....i'm going to live to see another day :D

hey cawacko...how is it up in SF? anyone freaking out over this?

Let me see... People who lived in the vicinity of Three Mile Island got an equivalent of two chest x-rays worth of radiation and it was contained.

I'm good with "raised to the level of Three Mile Island.

Have you read some of the studies about long-term effects in the area of 3-mile island?

They really have no idea when it comes to radiation & the effects, imo...

what should i do? do you think i'm going to get to radiation poisoning? there are some buying up rad pills...but most are not...they are telling us we are safe. the models i've seen, albeit forecasts, show that very little rads will reach the west coast.

I don't think the west coast is in danger, but I don't think anyone knows that much about radiation, so what could I possibly know? It's my hunch there isn't a danger, but in general, I think we as a species are in a little over our head when it comes to nukes.

One thing I read that I didn't like today was an anonymous source in our gov't saying we no longer believe what the Japanese are saying about it...

My God, surely Californians have enough to worry about already? How about the natural levels of radioactive radon present in many parts of California? Those levels are many times higher than the few atoms of decay products travelling on the wind from Japan. I suspect that the doctors, lawyers and trauma counsellors will very busy in the next few months.

i read that too...wasn't sure what to make of that, given, i thought we had our people on the ground there. didn't make me feel good though, so i bought extra water bottles today

i believe the WC is ok as well. the radiation has to travel 5000 miles or so and will have dissipated a good deal by the time it reaches here. i base some of this on forecast models and my research of chernobyl. chernobyl was a much greater risk of danger as a live reactor actually blew up and forced enormous amounts of radiation into the air and the radiation immediately entered the lower and upper atmosphere, unlike the slow leak happening at this moment. also, the WC was not harmed as some anticipated. nor was alaska.

i'm sure we will be ok, i heard the containment rods are not even part of an active reactor, rather, an old reactor, so they are storage. supposedly less harmful. don't know.

You can't seriously believe them, can you? It's impossible to know how bad it is at this point. How could you accept any sort of comparrison.

Gee no big deal, just a nuclear accident. THey took all these precautions to prevent it. But it turns out, even when it happens it's still ok. Party Time. I want my consumerism.
