Japan loses 2nd Batte for Okinawa

During a disjointed resignation speech in Tokyo, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama acknowledged that his departure was spurred by his failure to keep a campaign promise to move the U.S. base on Okinawa, home to more than half the 47,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan.

Hatoyama's failure to move Marine Corps Air Station Futenma infuriated Okinawans and characterized Hatoyama in many Japanese eyes as a weak leader unable to stand up to the United States.

Overall, the Japanese public supports the U.S. presence and agrees with the idea that, due to the U.S. military presence, Japan's national security is maintained, but Okinawans remain opposed to any U.S. military presence on their island.

he is an idiot and didn't resign over one issue....and if your information is accurate, the majority appear to want the us there...so i fail to see how "japan" lost any battle here

Not the majority in Okinawa. There are better places for a military base.

I don't think regional input should be entirely ignored. 85% of Okinawans oppose it. If it were a US state there's no way the state would allow it there. But Japanese regions have little power.

this isn't a US state watermark

i highly doubt you would take this stance if 85% of people from wyoming wanted to sell yellowstone park and make minimalls and condos and take that revenue to benefit the people of wyoming....

your stances are highly partisan, that is, its right solely because it fits your world view

and if the federal government needs a military base in a state...guess what....they get it

The federal government never needs a military base. The wishes of those most effected must be considered first.

you're joking right....do you understand nothing of history and law?

and i notice you ran from my wyoming exmaple....

The government can ignore the wishes of a region, but it's usually not wise to do so. That's why the Japanese Democrats ran on the platform of relocating the bases.

and tell us watermark....how has that worked out for the prior prime ministers who ran on the same platform....

hint: they didn't last

anyone with any modicum of sense would realize that this is NOT the will of the people, yet you would have us put the will of a small region against the will of the majority of the nation....

like is said, your logic would support wyoming developing yellowstone national park into mini malls and condos if 85 percent of the people from wyoming want it....

The will of those affected against the will of those not affected. IMHO the Okinawans should rebel against their ungrateful government.

if you're going to cut out and ignore the bulk of the discussion...i have no reason to further this with you

as i said, youi're an extreme partisan, its only right because it fits your world view, your kind are dangerous to freedom

Conservatives are dangerous to freedom. I am trying to oppose them. Therefore, I support freedom.
