Jan. 6 hearings have wounded Trump, and more decline may be ahead
Trump’s die-hard supporters haven’t changed their view, but the steady flow of testimony has caused many Republicans to start questioning if he should be their candidate.

WASHINGTON — Six weeks of televised hearings by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol have not collapsed Donald Trump's support, but they have left the former president politically wounded and deepened his legal jeopardy.
Yes, Trump remains the most powerful figure in the Republican Party, able to exact revenge against political figures who openly fight him. His chief Republican tormentor on the Jan. 6 panel, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, faces almost certain defeat in her primary next month — a recent poll showed her trailing her Trump-endorsed opponent by 22 percentage points.
But even before the hearings, losses by Trump-endorsed candidates in other primaries showed the limits of his power to reward or punish. At the same time, his much-vaunted moneymaking operation has slowed, with fundraising by his main political group falling sharply in the last six months and slipping behind that of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, as the Washington Post reported this week.
Against that background, Trump's widely rumored plan to formally declare this fall that he's running for the 2024 presidential nomination looks more desperate than dominating — a high-risk gambit by a politician who fears the spotlight may soon shine on someone else.

“The president’s dereliction of duty on Jan. 6 tested the integrity of this historic principle as never before, endangering American lives and our democracy,” the military leaders added. “The lesson of that day is clear. Our democracy is not a given. To preserve it, Americans must demand nothing less from their leaders than an unassailable commitment to country over party — and to their oaths above all.”

I think it's much more a case of him losing the support of moderate Republican voters and swing voters.

That was already evident in the last election.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he won the primaries and got the nomination, but I'd be surprised if he won the general election.

Depends on who the Democrats nominate.

And if some proggie extremist asshole like Bernie "Old BS" Sanders divides the party again like in 2016.

If the Dems can find a good, solid, centrist who doesn't spout a bunch of pipe dreams about free everything for everybody and doesn't pander to "woke" politics, Trump wouldn't stand a chance.

I don't think Trump will come close to getting the nomination. He's damaged goods. Since he lost the popular vote in both elections, the Reps won't let him get the nomination and lose another election.

Trump's political career is over.

Trump is a criminal who needs hard time

Trump damaged? Trump has been emotionally damaged since he came out the womb. With all this damning evidence the committee has set forth, it is still unconceivable that Garland is still struggling on whether to prosecute this corrupt criminal and prove to the American stupid that no one is above the law. If Trump is not held accountable for the treasonist act he pulled, than this nation needs to let every criminal out of jail.

Trump's political career is over.

Personally, I avoid making pronouncements based on predictions. Or predictions period.

The future is always uncertain and too many unexpected things can happen.

There were people in 2015 saying Trump would never win the primaries but look what happened.

The problem is that he still appeals to the right-wing nutjobs and the right-wing nutjobs still dominate the Republican voting base.

Anyone who dismisses their opponent out of hand is a fool.

What do you know you thought Hillary would win and you thought Biden was a good choice.

Making a criminal case in court is different than making a case to the public for information purposes.

People in positions like Garland's have to consider what is best for the psyche of the country as a whole, rather than just appealing to the lust for revenge of one segment of it.

I'll be perfectly happy if in the end, all of this results in Trump's public approval ratings being in the sewer.

It's not just losing the attention that he fears; it's not being protected from liability/prosecution if he's not IMPOTUSx2 again.

IF nothing else, he needs to be barred from ever holding any public office ever again, at least in America.

Agree. Garland and Biden's cowardice are inexcusable.

What do you know you thought Hillary would win and you thought Biden was a good choice.

Hillary won the popular vote.

Had it not been for that rumpled old proggy dipshit Uncle Bernie and 77,000 idiots across three reliably Democrat states deciding to not cast a vote, she would have easily trounced Trump in the electoral college too.

Biden IS a good choice.

He is a 1,000x better President than that carnival barker lunatic he replaced.
