Now one is obviously going to pay more rent to be in San Francisco than most other cities but view space in a Class A building can be had for $50/sq.ft. Pelosi is paying over $72/sq.ft.

Pelosi's new office is House's costliest by far

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has more than quadrupled the rent on her San Francisco district office, making the $18,736-a-month cost of her new South of Market space the highest in the House, according to a new report.

The rent - part of Pelosi's budget, which is funded by taxpayers - is nearly double the next-highest rent in the House: Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., pays $10,600 a month for his Manhattan office, while representatives from Sacramento, Boston and Los Angeles pay nearly that much, the report said.

The financial data were compiled from public records by the nonprofit Sunlight Foundation and Roll Call, a political newspaper. Information from the database is not yet available online.

Pelosi moved in the fall from the federal building at 450 Golden Gate Ave. to the 18-story federal building at 90 Seventh St. She had been paying about $4,300 a month for her old office, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said.

"After being based in the Burton Federal Building for over 20 years, we were no longer able to meet the needs of San Franciscans in the existing space," Hammill said in a statement. "The new office space is 3,075 square feet, nearly a third larger than the old space, which was of inadequate size. Additionally, the new building is more centrally located, right off of Market Street, which allows for easier access for constituents via public transportation.

In addition to the speaker's space needs, her new office is also more secure, Hammill added.

"As speaker, the security needs are different," he said. "The new San Francisco Federal Building offers enhanced security features, which were a major factor in the decision to move offices."

Sounds like she is very worried about security. I bet she has good reason to be.

I'm down with anti incumbents. Just look at their financials. They are all multi millionaires off our backs.

Does anyone know how the financials of this work? If a politician is renting space in a federal building as Pelosi is is one hand of the government just paying the other hand so in reality it doesn't matter how much that person pays in rent? Or is that wrong?

Capitalism in action.

Wearing our leftist button today, are we?

Well, kind of. Basically, members of Congress get X amount of dollars for staff, office space, etc. . . which funds are appropriated by Congress and then apportioned among the parties and whacked up according to however the parties themselves want to whack it up.

In this instance, Pelosi is spending money from the amounts appropriated to Congress to (most likely) the GSA which oversees federal property. The rent funds (most likely) go into the Federal Buildings Fund which is used to managed all federal buildings.

In essence, the money is just moving from the Congressional appropriations funds to Pelosi's office to the GSA to the Federal Buildings Fund.

So each party in Congress pretty much gets X dollars to split among their members and they have to 'fight' among themselves as to how to divide it? Obviously someone with offices in NY or SF will pay far more than most others in rent. I can imagine this leads to some interesting internal squabbles over how much so-so is spending vs. someone else.

Actually, I misspoke, there are base amounts that everyone gets but leadership get more cash, committee chairs get more cash, subcommittee chairs get more cash and so on. From the base amount, members can apportion it as they see fit (i.e. very nice office with high rent but fewer staff v. lower rent office with more staff). Obviously, because she is speaker Pelosi gets more cash than anyone else and may even get some funds for security purposes from the Secret Service.

still looking for confirmation on this.....her new office is in the San Fransisco Federal Building.....I can find no indication that the federal government does not own the San Fransisco Federal Building.....it would seem logical, then, that the folks getting this $18k a month rent, is us......
