Trump often tells crowds at his campaign rallies that he doesn't need outside financial support to get to the White House, but some of his fans feel differently.

Donors to a political spending group formed to promote Trump's candidacy said in interviews on Sunday they admired the billionaire businessman's professed financial independence but thought a cash boost would help.

So people sent in small sums - $25 here, $100 there - hoping it would help.

"He needs all the help he can get," said Diane Abair, 83, a real estate agent in California, who sent $50 to the group, Great America PAC.

She said she didn't think her donation tarnished Trump's claim that he won't have to pander as president to any special interest groups because "he's not backed by big donors".

"I'm not somebody that he can be beholden to," she said.

Hope Hicks, Trump's spokeswoman, did not respond to a request for comment.

He reminds me of a televangelist, and his supporters are filled with holy zeal to justify everything he does, even when he's caught lying.

Either way, Trump has only about $327 million in liquid assets, according to Forbes, meaning that he would essentially have to spend all his cash to match Romney’s 2012 campaign spending total.

Trump has made his self-funding and his rejection of super PACs a major selling point of his campaign, boasting that special interests have “no control” over him.

Trump knows he has a political money problem, and that he may soon start to finance his campaign like other candidates. Trump plans to pivot and start raising money for the general election if he wins the GOP nomination.

A pro-Trump super PAC dubbed Great America has hired veteran GOP strategist Jesse Benton and has a $15 million primary fundraising goal.

Sheldon Adelson, for one, replied “Why not?” when asked earlier this year at a resort gala whether he would support Trump. Even the Republican National Committee, which until now has given Trump something of a cold shoulder, is said to be gearing up to help Trump.

You seemed confused about what the OP says about Trump's claim to be 100% self-funded.

I noticed that you asked "is he?" after it was clearly explained that he isn't.

No, he's not self-funded.

First, there's the fact that his campaign has raised almost $24.5 million from outside donations. Then, there's the fact that at the end of the campaign, win or lose, he'll have actually profited from running.

His business entity loaned his campaign over $17 million. That loan will be repaid by the campaign before the end of the run.

His official "campaign headquarters" is paid by his campaign to his business entity, as the headquarters is housed in one of the Trump buildings (so he's making money from that by paying himself from the campaign's coffers).

His official campaign flights are handled by his own airline, and paid for by campaign funds (so he's making money from that by paying himself from the campaign's coffers).

Everything he does is funded in some way that actually pays a remuneration to his business entity (or entities).

What he's self-funding is, in fact, himself.
