Is BP a buy?

I would defer to topspin's expertise on stocks.

Personally, being a communistic lefty I would only invest in publicly-controlled oil companies. Citgo, Statoil, and Petrobras.

As for BP, the whole xenophobia angle is pretty lame. A lot of people don't understand that these entities are really global financial entities. None of the oil majors are really "american", "british", or "dutch". They're all multinational companies with zero loyalty to any one nation. Although, I gotta admit, those French companies Total and Elf are in a league by themselves. Bribing they're way through Africa, and puppeteering some corrupt african governments, they seem to be some kind of throw-back to the French colonial empire. They're like a modern French foreign legion.

And the caricature angle doesn't hold water either. Corporations aren't purely evil. They're inanimate entities that exist only on paper. I know plenty of good people who work for BP. It's some of their top management that seems to totally suck.

All that said, I would advocate having the BP CEO drawn-and-quartered - a la' Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

I've always believed that a Marxist is worst than a serial killing pedophile.

A thief, a murderer, and lazy as can be.
