Iran has threatened to allow the transporting of illegal drugs through the country if the West does not stop criticizing the Islamic's nation's human rights record.
The bold statement was made by top Iranian official Mohammad Javad Larijani who defended Iran's record on fighting drug trafficking, noting that 74 per cent of executions in the country are related to drug offenses.
Mr Larijani is the head of Iran's High Council for Human Rights and the comments were posted on the Iranian judiciary's website today.
Iran lies on a major drugs route between Afghanistan and Europe and the decision could be a huge blow in the fight against the drugs trade.
Most of the world's heroine comes from war-ravaged Afghanistan which is then transported through to Iran and onto the rest of the world.
Iran has fiercely defended its borders from drug smugglers and has built canals, concrete walls and installed barbed wire along the 900km border with Afghanistan.
