Indonesians learn they've been praying in the wrong direction

Ridwan said Muslims need not fear that their prayers have been wasted because they were facing the wrong way.

Just weird... Why would people need that kind of reassurance that an all-powerful being might not be able to hear them because they aren't facing Mecca?

Its just a traditional sign of respect. Catholic Churches have always been built with the tabernacles facing toward Rome. Probably not in a lot of the newer, less inspiring structures, but its just been a traditional sign of respect.
