Progressive Lula da Silva will return to Brazil's presidency in stunning comeback

Sao Paulo(CNN) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been elected the next president of Brazil, in a stunning comeback following a tight run-off race on Sunday. His victory heralds a political about-face for Latin America's largest country, after four years of Jair Bolsonaro's far-right administration.

The 76-year-old politician's win represents the return of the left into power in Brazil, and concludes a triumphant personal comeback for Lula da Silva, after a series of corruption allegations lead to his imprisonment for 580 days. The sentences were later annulled by the Supreme Court, clearing his path to run for reelection.

"They tried to bury me alive and I'm here," he said in a jubilant speech to supporters and journalists on Sunday evening, describing the win as his political "resurrection."

Brazil's Bolsonaro goes down in presidential election — after saying he'd stage a coup if he lost

President Joe Biden has already congratulated the new president.

"I send my congratulations to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election to be the next president of Brazil following free, fair, and credible elections. I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the months and years ahead," he said in a statement.

There is a question about whether Bolsonaro will accept the election results. Last week, Lula expressed concern that he might not, a tactic that ally Donald Trump utilized in his 2020 election results and other far-right candidates have adopted.

So now is the loser denying the election, claiming it was rigged? Are his supporters threatening violence, preparing to overtake the system?

I saw that. At least Latin America has sane voters.

Latin America is changing. Throughout the region right-wing governments, firmly established for almost two decades, have been replaced by socialist and social democratic ones in the last four years.

The former leader’s victory on Sunday was the latest in a political wave across Latin America, with wins by left-leaning politicians in Argentina, Colombia and Chile.
Brazil got rocked by COVID as well

While Lula da Silva left office with a 90 percent approval rating, he was later charged in the criminal investigation dubbed “Operation Car Wash” — which involved accusations of money laundering, bribes, and other corruption allegations — alongside hundreds of other high-ranking officials in Latin America. He was convicted for corruption and money laundering in 2017, but a court threw out his conviction in March 2021.

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro became the 38th president of Brazil running under the conservative Liberal Party. Known as “The Trump of the Tropics,” his extreme far-right policies include being a climate denier whose policies have led to major deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, downplaying Covid, and sowing distrust of vaccines. The virus has killed more than 680,000 people in Brazil.

This is why almost all of Central and South America have been mired in half-assed economies, failure to fully develop infrastructure, and really become 1st world nations. They are stuck with a combination of Hispanic (Spain / Portugal) culture, and for decades have seesawed between Rightwing strongmen and radical Leftist, Socialist governments.

Brazil is about as important to Americans as the price of rutabagas in Outer Mongolia.

These southern hemispheric countries are, for the most part, third world countries that are so poverty stricken that they walk from Venezuela to our southern border for food.
