OK, so first off, this bill is in all likelihood going nowhere. It's not anywhere on the senate calendar for the rest of the year. But the gist of it is that it would switch to a Canadian style merit based immigration system and halve the current immigration cap. I am not opposed to the first part of the bill, I think that's a good change. The current system was proposed by white supremacists from the south who for some reason thought that by prioritizing extended family over education, it would preserve the current racial mix. It obviously didn't, it just lead to chain migration. So we may as well alter things so that we get better educated immigrants.

As for the second part, I'm wholly opposed. If anything I would support increasing the current immigration cap.

Anyway this is going nowhere.
 
If we encourage more highly educated immigrants there will be less competition at the low end anyway, no reason to slash immigration levels.
 
Actually reading about it it appears it doesn't encourage skill based immigration very much. Just employment based immigration. IMO we should just copy the Canadian immigration system.
