If Trump was a Democrat

And he could have been. It can be argued that MOST of his public positions over the past decade+ have been more left than right.

And even beyond that...he could have won as a Democrat. He'd have had the same effect on "his" voters, and could have beaten Hillary in a primary. And he'd have laid waste to the Republican - because he did in the GOP primaries, no matter who it would have been.

Can you imagine the right's reaction to Trump today as a Democrat? Can you imagine how opposite worshipers like Hannity & Ingraham would be, and our own right-wingers here?

I know exactly what they'd be saying right now. Exactly.

Everybody knows.

And what would the left be doing if he was a democrat?

Desh would love him. I'd still think he was a psycho.

I think it would be surprising, though. I don't think people like Maddow & Matthews would try to "spin" Trump. I think they'd be less critical, but there would certainly be a noticeable element of abhorrence.

When will you liberals stop fantasizing and live in the now?

The leftwing had a "Trump". His name was Ralph Nader and he was never able to garner more than 2% of the leftwing vote.

You've never heard me say Trump was an ideologically pure conservative. In fact, I've had to compromise on some principles to support him. Something I never thought I'd do. I sat out in 2012, in part, because I didn't like Romney and I thought he'd beat Obama. Also, since I live in WV my vote really didn't matter anyway lol.

But yeah, Trump is kinda/sorta a democrat---of the Bill Clinton stripe. He has nothing in common with the current crop of leftist democrats.

I wish Trump was a straight down line conservative, but he's not. I'm not sure real conservatives are electable anymore. In no small part because at some point, 'we the people' lost the media. In very large part, the media has picked sides---and it wasn't the conservative side.

Trump is sort of the man for the hour. Unlike recent conservatives, he's willing to take on the media where others would cower or roll over.

But the criticism becomes the charm: Trump isn't a conservative---but he's not an ideologue either. His vision isn't ideological---it's mostly nuts and bolts common sense. Enforcement of immigration laws is a return to sanity, for example.

Putting national interests ahead of global interests---again, common sense. If you exhumed one of the founders and brought them back to life and they found out our leaders were putting global interests ahead of national interests they would say 'WTF are you doing?'.

They were 'nationalists', Trump is a 'nationalist', I'm a 'nationalist', and 'nationalists' won Trump the EC. And 'nationalism' made this a great country.

And it will make it great again.

you're right....but then of course he wouldn't have nominated Gorsuch, wouldn't have paused immigration, wouldn't have been accused of being a Russian puppet, and Melania would have been nominated for sainthood.....in short, there would be no reason for Republicans to like him.....

In 1978, Walter Monday and Cesar Chavez went down to the Mexican border to protest illegals taking union farm jobs.

Trump is basically a common sense 1970s Democrat, before the party went bonkers.

The leftwing had a Trump named Trump. He voted for Carter and Mondale, supported partial-birth abortion, cheated on his wives, was best friends with Bill Clinton, stuck the taxpayers with his casino losses, and gave yuge contributions to Rahm and Hillary.

Then there's all that lol.

Trump resists the usual ideological categories. That said, where he is a conservative he's a pretty strong one.

Yeah, well the choices were Former nuclear sub captain, Carter, or Jerry Brown who was dating Linda Ronstadt at the time, or Gerry Ford who couldn't even convince the Socialist Democrats to stop the Socialist, Pol Pot's, massacre of millions of his own civilians. And all of that was 4 decades ago.

Of course he gave to the Hillbag. She was a NY senator and he wanted to buy influence, and she was for sale.

How much did he take from taxpayers for his casino losses? I'd like to see the dollar amount and a reliable unbiased source.

Ralph Nader was an OUTSIDER like Trump. Dems didn't like Ralph because he was an anti corruption candidate.

if companies like GE used the tax code to pay 0 im sure trump used the tax code as well and various bankrupcy laws. If democrats didnt want them used then they should repeal them.

What no one understands is if the bankrupcy laws were not like that and your entire personal fortune was at stake everytime you started a business no one would risk it.

I would take Gerry all day, everyday. When you are unable to convince a group of people against something, not merely wrong, but profoundly evil, then they were going to do it no matter who you are or what you said. The leftists in Congress in 1975 would have supported Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot even if George Washington were president.
