he will be able to point at the repubs as being unable to pull the u s of a out of a recession/depression when running in 2012 as will congressional office seeking dems...

dems won in 2008

reps win in 2010

then dems win in 2012

the voter do not forgive failure and neither side can get us out of a recession in two more years

they're not going to win Congress. Might barely win the House but won't win the Senate.

I'd say it's about equally likely that the Dems retain the house as the Republicans gain the senate. The smart money right now is on a split congress; not entirely impossible, since we still have a few months to the election. Right now the Republicans seem to be solidifying their lead, though.

If we are still in recession, and Obama has vetoed measures that would have "helped if only he'd have let them pass" failure to regain economic growth will be placed squarely on the head of the President. It is likely then that the Rs would take back the Senate and gain more seats in the House as well as a loss by the President.

Your argument only works if the republicans are stuck in a vacuum and can't point out obstructionism by the WH...

then it will be the year of the independent, the voters will have to blame someone

it may be that they will blame everyone, except their favorite party...or go for independents

I'd say that the writing is on the wall, and politicians will someday soon be worried more and more about investigations.

and we'll be reduced to a 2 year flip flop on policy that will ultimately destroy us. hooray.

I'd hardly figure you for a "stay the course" guy w/ the measures this admin have taken.

Things like the stimulus are basically over. Things are kind of teetering right now, and could go either way. I don't think it would be a bad idea to see some other strategies implemented at this time, even things that are philisophically 180 degrees from what we've seen.

Nothing is going to "destroy us." That's a bit dramatic.

failures of 2008 came close to a depression which given the character of a lot of voters, a depression may do us in

That is quite ignorant. He would have had two years with a super majority and failed to pull the economy out of the doldrums. Two then turn around and say, 'you Reps couldn't pull us out' when HE would still have been the LEADER of this country is nothing short of absurd. It would be self-indicting.

If the economy is still in the tank in 2012, incumbants of both parties will fall... including Obama. If the economy is recovering and unemployment numbers are down to the 7-8% range, Obama will get re-elected (barring a very charismatic and intelligent Rep being found to challenge him... which at this point I don't think they have).

I think it's a big if. I don't think Repubs will do as well as the pundits are predicting. This ideological war they are fighting to take the Republican party even further to the right is going to alienate a lot of mainstream voters.

I hope incumbents will fail- they are the main problem.

only things that's could take us out of this crappy market cycle are:
1) combination of reduced govt spending and reduced taxes (shrunken govt)
2) some major industrial/technological advance that triggers growth (think .com)
