ICE tries to deport Native American woman

A Native American woman was almost deported after being caught up in Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown.

The US Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for Leticia Jacobo, 24, who was born in Phoenix and is a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Her sister said Ms Jacobo was targeted as a result of “racial profiling” by authorities.

She had been arrested in September for allegedly driving with a suspended license and was due to be released on Nov 11.

However, just hours before, her mother, Ericka Burns, was told that instead of being released, she would be taken into federal custody ahead of her possible deportation.

Mistakes happen. This one was corrected. Jacobo was arrested for the suspended license, but it isn't clear from the article where this happened. It certainly wasn't in Arizona.

Lt. Mark Chance, a spokesman for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees the jail, said the ICE detainer was a result of “human error” and was intended for a different detained person. He called it a “silly” mistake and said internal discussions would be held to prevent it from happening again in the future.

There is no Polk County in Arizona, so it occurred in a different state. My bet is that the local sheriff's office made the mistake and ICE simply slapped a detainer on her because the sheriff notified them she was an illegal. Again, the article doesn't make this clear but there's no reason to believe that ICE would initiate the detainer on someone without notification first.

From the story, I think the mistake was made by the local sheriff's office, not by ICE. Basically, they notify ICE they think she's illegal, ICE comes along later and corrects the mistake.
Yea all non white people look a like and are suspectes

Right... "I think the Sheriff's office made the mistake, and ICE corrected it." means that it is time to insert leftist nonsense in lieu of an intelligent response. Think better, remember I'm not exactly white... Rethink and restate what you supposedly think I meant when I said I think ICE corrected the Sheriff's Office mistake.

So the system worked and she wasn't deported. Big deal.

There are four Polk counties in America, one each in

Florida
Texas
Iowa
N. Carolina

The article doesn't tell us which one is involved.

I believe it was in Iowa. Regardless it is the Sheriff's Office that made the mistake, not ICE. In this instance they point at the group they dislike the most regardless of what the article says. The article tells the story of a Sheriff's Office that contacted ICE to see if they should detain this person, but that she was released.

If ICE acted on a case like this, it is their fault. They are acting fast and brutally. They do not take care. If local police said she was illegal. ICE should have checked, not dragged her off the streets to jail. The way ICE acts ensures that many innocent people will be wronged and abused.

ICE "acts" in that they check to see if the person should have a hold when the local office contacts them and asks. In this case, from what we learn in the story, they did not "act" in any way that kept this woman detained. The Sheriff's Office told the family that they were going to check this first, but that didn't pan out and they released her.

Send her back to..... ????

I think you will find that it was her family that proved that ICE was mistaken. ICE does not care if they are mistaken. If she had not been in local custody, her family might never have even known to clear her.

When did a citizen have to prove themselves innocent? There was no evidence against her, but still her and her family needed to prove she was innocent before she had any hope of being released.

Your defense of ICE is expected.

Unless she was determined to be a danger to the public, why not just write her up? She had a driver's license, albeit suspended. How fucked up is Arizona in tracking their own drivers?

Had she been a blond white girl, would things have turned out different or the same?
