I spent about an hour and a half at Starbucks

I made several observations while enjoying my coffee.

Early at about 7:30 there was a line of rushed well dressed business people getting coffee and running off to work.

That lasted until just a little after 8, then came a parade of people who arrived on motorcycles, bicycles and with dogs. The conversation shifted to the business they owned, the people they have working for them and where they were having lunch. Lots of discussion took place about the leisure activities they were going to undertake this afternoon.

Its my observation that the rich do not work anywhere near as hard as the wealthy.

Most of the rich/wealthy people I know don't work very hard. An acquantance of mine owns a freight company. His work consists of sending a few e-mails per week, and his net worth is somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million. Another example - one of my friends runs an auto parts website and makes around $250k/year and works fewer hours than average. However, for several years he had to work long hours and live poor to get where he's at now. I'd also say he's the exception - most people making "only" $250k/year probably work more hours than average.

In general, I think it's true that wealthy people work less, but only because they're repeating the benefit of their hard work. In other words, they probably had to work extremely long hours and under tremendous stress to get there.

Do you think they are reaping the benefit of there hard work or are most of them reaping the benefit of there ancestors hard work or corruption?

Most of them are reaping the benefit of their own hard work. They spoke of businesses they own, people they have working for them. In order to have employees, etc. it takes a successful business. Otherwise they simply lose their money and wouldn't be among the supposed "rich" crowd you had there.

I think Jarod was making a distinction between wealthy and rich people. The businessmen he described were likely "wealthy," in that they earn a lot of money and receive good benefits. Then the rich people rolled in...

I would love to know the net worth of the people. It was a very interesting morning of people watching.

Im not sure where the line is between wealthy and rich.

I don't think hes talking about John Kerry (married it) or the Kennedys or J. Rockefeller (ancestors) or Nancy Pelosi (corruption)......broom

I'm not. Many people go there for coffee that aren't "rich"... I see people at work who make 50K-60K who have one every day.

You can have money and make 50k-60k, I know many people with money who make about that, they dont get it from there salary.

The way my friend describes wealthy and rich, the NFL players are rich, the NFL owners are wealthy. I thought that was a good description.

I make about 45 - 50K a year. I live well, have everything I need, most of what I want and don't have any aspirations to make more. I just want to retire in a few years. I don't know if I'm wealthy or rich but I do better than many around here and worse than some. Oh....I make my own coffee at home or buy it at the local store for 25 cents a bottomless cup. :)

Where you live, I'd bet that's the equivalent of making about $120K a year where I am. It's all relative....

That may have a smidgen of truth to it.....but those players, if they lived like good, smart, law abiding citizens would be wealthy in the future.....they certainly have a head start compared to the rest of us....

Most of the wealthy got that way because of their hard work and sound investing, and hopefully they will the ancestors of their future wealthy or rich children if the fuckin' gov. don't confiscate their property at death........
