High school year ended with a big fight
About 300 students involved in brawl outside Proviso East, Maywood chief says
The final day of classes at Proviso East High School in Maywood turned out to be a wild one, according to police and video accounts.
Ten people were arrested after a massive fight erupted in the school parking lot May 31 and quickly spread onto streets in nearby neighborhoods of the western suburb, according to Maywood police Chief Tim Curry. At its height, about 300 students and possibly some nonstudents were involved in the brawl, Curry said.
The fight began about 9:30 a.m., but Curry did not know what sparked it. He said the fight took place over several blocks from Maywood Drive to Pine Street and from 1st Avenue to 17th Avenue.
Videos of the fight, which Curry confirmed as being authentic, have appeared on YouTube.
Curry said one student went into her apartment and brought out two chef knives to attack another girl with whom she was previously fighting.
"We grabbed the girl from behind, and she dropped one of the knives," Curry said. "We were then able to grab the other knife from her."
Curry said the officers intentionally tried to keep the fight moving as a method officers sometimes use to help disperse such incidents.
Dozens of officers eventually helped get the fighting under control, and it dwindled down near 17th Avenue.
"Many just started to walk away and go home," he said. He said the 10 people were arrested for disobeying police orders and instigating fighting.
A statement from Proviso Township High Schools District 209, however, tried to distance itself from the incident, saying the disturbance did not happen on school grounds.
"We take safety and security of our students, staff and school environment very seriously," district spokesman Rob Daniel said in the statement. "That is the reason that extra procedures were put into place to ensure a smooth end of school year at Proviso East. Our school year ended without any incident, and we are very pleased to report that."
