The Houthis have confirmed that their prime minister was killed during an Israeli air strike on the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed on Thursday along with several ministers, who had gathered for a meeting, the Iran-backed rebels said in a statement.
Mr Rahawi was a politician – rather than a military figure – who had served as prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi-led government since August last year.
The Israeli military said it had “precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa in Yemen” on Thursday, with footage showing explosions in and around the city.
Mr Rahawi was a member of the General People’s Congress party and had previously served on the country’s Supreme Political Council. However, his role was largely symbolic as control resides mostly in the hands of Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the militia group’s leader.
