After electing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker of the House in the wee hours of Saturday morning, Republicans postponed a planned vote on the proposed rules package that will govern the House during the 118th Congress. That means there’s still time to save the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) from emasculation.
The GOP proposal blocks the office from hiring new staffers after a month and retroactively imposes term limits on the eight-member board, which would remove three of four Democratic members.
