International hotel magnate Sant Singh Chatwal, a pal of Bill and Hillary Clinton, pleaded guilty Thursday to recruiting straw donors to make illegal campaign contributions to three federal candidates.
“That’s the only way to buy them,” Chatwal explained in a conversation secretly recorded by an informant in October 2010.
Chatwal, 70, the chairman of Hampshire Hotels & Resorts which includes the posh Dream Hotel in Manhattan, surrendered in Brooklyn Federal Court accompanied by a squad of defense lawyers and publicists. An hour later, he left a convicted felon.
He admitted to masterminding a scheme to raise more than $180,000 for the unidentified candidates by skirting then-federal campaign finance law that limited contributions to individuals to $2,400 or $5,000 to a political action committee, according to court papers.

The fake donors were then reimbursed by Chatwal. Sources said the candidates — Hillary Clinton, former Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd and formner Florida Rep. Kendrick Meek — were not complicit in Chatwal’s crimes. Chatwal also pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness — counseling an informant not to answer questions from FBI and IRS agents who were breathing down his neck.
