Holding steady at six

The number of coronavirus cases continues to climb in the U.S. The new disease has killed six people in the country, four from one nursing home near Seattle and two others in the same county. The cluster of deaths at the nursing facility in King County highlights the serious threat the disease poses to the elderly and infirm. There were just over 100 cases in 15 states as of Tuesday morning, with New Hampshire and Georgia being the most recent to join the battle against the virus.

And it’s misleading. The death toll from Corona isn’t ‘continuing to climb’—it’s the same as yesterday lol. And the deaths are all clustered in the same nursing home in Washington state. Sadly, it’s hardly unusual for the common flu to basically clean out a wing in a nursing home.

Seven deaths in Washington State

Infection spreading six weeks before we were put on notice

Stock market falling again today

And the right wing refuses to contextualize the potential harms from these events

The death toll has continued to climb from Friday, yes.

Contextualize your content, please.

If it were contextualized the numbers would be compared to the common flu.

Nursing home patients are probably the most susceptible population in society. In fact, that’s not even an argument.

Why doesn’t the article present that context? Afraid they wouldn’t get as many clicks?

No, contextualization does not require CV to be compared with the common flu. Only you are saying that.

The most at-risk, older males with health issues, will OF COURSE be the majority of those dying.

For context, the CV has a mortality rate of 2 to 3%.

The flu has a 1/10,000 to 1/100,000 rate.

Darth, it is ok to be factual.

Stock Market is down 500 points.

Those stats are misleading because it’s only based on *known cases* of Corona Virus. It’s a near certainty that not everyone with flu symptoms—or has had the flu in the past 8 weeks gets checked.

But for some odd reason, it doesn’t get reported that way.

It sounds as though you believe that this is a sporting event. How did you get appointed scorekeeper?

Even if you don't think a 2% fatality rate is that big a deal, 2% would be 6.4M people dying in the US from this thing.

2% of the global population is 140,000,000 people dying, which is about 10 million more than the total number of people who voted in 2016.

That's definitely not something to dismiss or diminish.

So far, deaths from the common flu far outweigh deaths from the coronavirus that amount to ZERO from a numbers perspective.

Except the 2% is almost certainly inflated because it doesn’t take into account non-reported infections where people don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital.

Sure enough, we aren’t seeing young and/or healthy people showing up in the mortality stats—like one would expect if this bug was particularly virulent. Sounds pretty similar to the common flu.

The 2% comes from the CDC.

I trust them more than I trust you or Trump, who aren't microbiologists, physicians, or fully developed human beings.

Then I dare you to go ahead and lick the fever sweat off a coronavirus patient if you think it's not a big deal.

The CDC can only use the data that’s available.

‘Available’ being the key concept. You don’t really think they’ve been able to test everyone with flu symptoms, do you?

If this virus is so deadly why are only the elderly and people with comorbid conditions showing up in the mortality stats?
