MAGAs were ecstatic when Elon Musk went all in on the cult. When the world’s richest man used his money and his mouth to back Trump, the low-net-worth, low-information voters felt validated. Their thinking was obvious: “He’s a smart guy — and he’s one of us.”
Sadly, reality bites.
The electoral high is long gone. The holidays are ending. The goals of the next administration are coming into focus. And the base is discovering what smarter people already knew. All politicians lie some of the time. Republican politicians lie all the time.
Now Musk has proved he is not a politician — he will tell the truth. And the base should now know what the new ultra-right-wing elites actually think. I say “should know” because the grassroots MAGAs seem slow to catch on — it had been nine years, and they still think Trump gives a damn about them — and they rarely venture beyond the echo chamber.
However, the ones paying attention — and those getting their philosophy from Steve Bannon and Laura Loomer — will have now realized that Musk and the tech bros bought the presidency, not to benefit the base, but to boost their profits. The oligarchs are on board with mass expulsions of foreign brown grunt workers. After all, not a lot of those unskilled laborers work in tech companies. And Trump, after a few show raids and the deportation of a few criminals, will realize the economic disaster of throwing out the workers doing the dirty job. And even if he doesn't, the fiscal hawks in Congress won’t fund the deportation insanity.
However, these oligarchs are not in favor of restricting foreign brown computer scientists, software engineers and programmers. Musk and his eager-beaver sidekick, Vivek Ramaswamy, have been clear on this. Ramaswamy by writing long tweets on how second-rate non-Indian Americans are. Musk with far shorter exhortations to purify the party.
In one egregious example Musk said, in the language of fascism, that MAGAs who do not toe his ‘I’m not yet rich enough’ plutocratic line must be kicked to the curb. Here’s the timeline of one example.
On Friday morning, Neera Tanden, who worked in the Biden administration, reflected on the GOP’s all-encompassing racism:
In the afternoon, Scott Adams, Dilbert creator and guardian of the xenophobic flame, shared Tanden’s tweet. Not to offer support. He used her sentiments to slime his erstwhile MAGA candidates for not being assholey enough.
Soon after, Twitter owner and free speech absolutist — as long as no one says things that hurt his feelings — ‘Leon’ Musk agreed. And told the world what he really thinks of Trump’s base. He replied to Adams:
If you think you have heard that kind of language before, it’s probably because Nazis liked to refer to Jews as invasive weeds and parasites — when they weren’t calling them disease carriers and blood polluters.

Dictators succeed in part because they terrify the racist base with fearmongering directed at a minority group. And because they promise the industrialists they will make money (see the Mussolini quote above).
In Trump’s Alice in Wonderland World, the oligarchs are smearing the base with language the base thinks should be directed at the minority group. Tyrants usually wait until they are in power before the purity purges start. But I guess Musk is impatient.
