Rep. Todd Akin was asked whether he favored allowing abortions in the case of rape.


His response: "First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."


In other words: Rape victims can secrete magical juices to prevent themselves from getting pregnant.

During a debate against his opponent for California's 1st Congressional District seat, Senator Doug La Malfa said that women who have abortions increase their risk of cancer.

After a TV station questioned his assertion, he issued a release the following day acknowledging that he was misinformed.

Both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute say there's no scientific evidence of a connection.

Contributing to an unscientific and potentially dangerous hysteria about the vaccine against the human papillomavirus, Rep. Michele Bachmann recounted on NBC's "Today" show that she had met a Florida woman who told her that her daughter had suffered mental retardation after receiving the vaccine.


"There is no second chance for these little girls if there is any dangerous consequences to their bodies," she said.


Her comments were met with widespread condemnation from the medical community, which pointed out that there was no documented case of a mental disorder stemming from the vaccine.

When Mitt Romney was still fighting for the GOP presidential nomination, he was unequivocal about climate change.


"My view is that we don't know what's causing climate change on this planet and the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us."


Now that he's seeking to appeal to the broader electorate, he has dialed that back a little.


In a statement this month he acknowledged that human activity is contributing to global warming.

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan, pizza magnate Herman Cain said he personally believed homosexuality was a sin.


That's OK as it goes; a lot of the GOP base agrees with him.


But he went on to say, "And although people don't agree with me, I happen to believe that it's a choice."


Actually, many people in the aforementioned religious-right base do agree with Cain, but psychologists do not.


The American Psychological Assn. has found no consensus about what causes same-sex attraction but concludes that "most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation."

If Akin, Bachmann, Romney, La Malfa and Cain are REALLY so concerned they should study science instead of selling snake oil. But, no that would require them to question their assumptions. They stink of Santorum.

“Not all folks are gifted in the same way,” Santorum told a crowd of more than 1,000 activists at the Americans for Prosperity forum in Troy, Mich. “Some people have incredible gifts with their hands. Some people have incredible gifts and ... want to work out there making things. President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob.”

As the crowd applauded, Santorum continued.

“There are good decent men and women who go out and work hard every day and put their skills to test that aren’t taught by some liberal college professor trying to indoctrinate them,” he said. “Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image. I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his.”

I want everyone to go to college too and soon the Ivy Walls will fall and make it a reality. But those who close their EYES will learn little when exposed to the light.
 
Education for the rich only, belief in junk science for corporate profits, no rights for workers or women, slave labor. What's new about this? These are right wing core values. Nothing has changed in 100 yrs except the amount of hate propaganda that makes people vote against their own self interests.

I've said for yrs. that the right no longer believes in American society, the proof is clear (if you don't believe Faux 'news')

House Republican leaders put out a bill Friday night that would slice and dice education funding far below current levels and far below what President Barack Obama wanted in his never-enacted fiscal year 2011 budget request. (List of cuts is here.)



The measure, which would continue federal funding for rest of the fiscal year, takes aim at some programs that were previously considered untouchable, including special education spending and Pell Grants to help low-and-moderate income students pay for college.
