Guns

It doesn't say the gun fired three times, only that it injured three kids in some non life-threatening way (thank the little gods).

My guess is it went off once and they were standing close enough to look at it and got powder burns rather than shot.

I thought it said it shot 3 times. If it only shot once, then that's a lot more likely (still a very unlikely event though).

Yeah, even more likely it was one of those hand grip safeties and it didn't even "fire" and they got spray from the round that went off but not actually fired and that is what injured them. But that is still very unlikely. It's easy to say you dropped it when you've pulled the trigger though and if you didn't have the hand strength to hold down the grip safety you'd get a result much like this.

May I just add to the discussion an agreement with SF's OP that this is a great example of irresponsibility on the part of the parents. I don't think he put it quite that way but that is the way that I took it.

I will also say that it is no mystery to me that the gun was loaded. My handguns are loaded all of the time. They're no better than a rock if they are not loaded. But the parent letting the kid get hold of the gun...irresponsible, IMO.

We're going off on a long tangent assuming that the child got the gun from the parent(s) but so far there is no evidence of it. I'd like to with hold judgement until there is some sort of evidence.

ah.... good catch.... I was like... 'I have never heard of that happening'... teaches me to read more carefully.

He may have found it in a field on his way to school. I'm not prepared to burn the parents as stupid until I'm sure they somehow are responsible for him getting the gun.

The way you presented it, it could still have happened. It's a fairly common malfunction in the SKS rifle when using ammo with soft primers.

Yep....common with SKS that I had for years. I finally got rid of it. Used if for years for plinking and even for deer hunting but the fully auto feature got worse and worse so I ridded myself of it. The mechanics of a semi-auto are such that like KoG says, it could happen.

I can live with waiting for damning evidence to surface but if it is found that he brought the gun from home....I blame the parents.

It only happens with soft primers. If you use surplus ammo it won't happen, and modern commercial ammo in that caliber uses military primers to avoid such things. I believe only Winchester ammunition was/is capable of creating the malfunction.
